Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 359 PM HST Thu Sep 23 2021

SYNOPSIS. A trade wind pattern will bring passing clouds and showers to mainly windward and mountain areas through the weekend and into next week. Increased showers are expected across windward Big Island late Saturday and Sunday.

DISCUSSION. A 1025 mb high positioned far northeast of the state and building high pressure aloft is providing for a stable trade wind pattern across the forecast area. Subsidence inversion at 8 to 9 thousand feet is keeping clouds and showers vertically limited and afternoon rainfall generally light in even the typically wettest windward and mountain areas. A few thin high clouds continue streaming northward across the state but these will be trending towards the west with the upper ridge building in from the east.

Expecting a trade wind weather pattern across the area for the next seven days. Ridging aloft will bring stable weather with passing clouds and showers the general rule. We are monitoring a trough far to the southeast of the state along the intertropical convergence zone near 144 west longitude. This feature is expected to swing northwestward over the next few days and skirt the southern portion of the state. The trough will likely bring the northern edge of the associated deeper tropical moisture plume near the Big Island as early as late Saturday and into early Sunday, bumping up the chances of rain along windward and upslope areas of the Big Island. We would also expect to have a slight boost in the trade wind strength this weekend as the trough passes by to our south.

AVIATION. With nearly stationary high pressure remaining far north of the area, trade winds will persist in the moderate to locally breezy range for the next several days. VFR will prevail over most areas, but lower cloudiness and showers moving along with the trades will bring brief MVFR conditions to mainly windward and mauka sections from time to time.

MARINE. Moderate to locally strong trade winds will remain in place for the foreseeable future, supported by a surface ridge to the N. A front passing far N of the islands has weakened the ridge, and surface pressures over the islands are down 1 to 2 mb over the past 24 hours. A new high building far NW of the area will strengthen the ridge over the next day or two, while a surface trough is expected to pass S of the area over the weekend. This should bring at least a subtle boost in trade wind speeds, to the point that a Small Craft Advisory (SCA) will likely be required for waters around Maui and the Big Island, where terrain accelerates the flow.

Long-period (~19 seconds) forerunners of a new NNW swell are arriving at buoy 51101 NW of Kauai, while shorter-period remnants of a declining NW swell are delivering some small surf to N and W facing shores. The new swell will build overnight and Friday, with peak surf heights expected late Friday into Saturday, remaining below advisory levels along exposed N and W facing shores. This swell will slowly diminish later Saturday, then drop more significantly Sunday. A small N swell is possible around the middle of next week. Surf along S facing shores will remain somewhat elevated the next couple of days before trending down next week. Short-period wind waves will support mostly small and choppy surf along E facing shores.

HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
