Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 1033 AM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

DISCUSSION. Overnight convection is quickly diminishing this morning. It did put out some decent wind and rain amounts mostly across the upper Keys. Island communities between Tavernier and Key Largo picked up over an inch of rainfall this morning with an outflow that activated a dormant boundary over the upper Keys. In addition, as this outflow went through it did bring wind gusts of 20 to 25 knots as it moved across Hawk Channel and into the Florida Bay.

Elsewhere, it has not rained, yet. However, looking at this morning's sounding we are weakly inhibited with moderately unstable mixed- layer CAPE. Taking a look at the office rooftop webcams, we still have mostly fair weather cu. The potential is there and the Hi-Res CAMs show convection trying to fire starting towards midday. Still being under a col, there still is not any organized lift and so any convection initiation will mostly have to occur due to mesoscale forcings and subtle boundary collisions. That all said, will leave 50% PoPs at this time.

MARINE. Overnight convection is quickly diminishing, though some residual showers and isolated thunderstorms remain across the far eastern Straits of Florida. New convection is starting to percolate across the deep Gulf waters. Otherwise, light to gentle variable breezes prevail this morning and will continue into this afternoon. Additional convection is possible as boundaries collide throughout the day.

AVIATION. The 12Z KKEY RAOB sampled gently veering southwesterly winds from the SFC to 700 mb, plentiful moisture, no dry layers, moderate ML instability, and weak inhibition. With daytime heating, island cloud lines should get going, with an hour or two of VCTS possible for both terminals. Weak steering this evening and overnight should limit the propagation of storms from Cuba and South Florida.

CLIMATE. In 1990, the daily record high temperature of 92F was last recorded in Key West. Temperature records date back to 1872.
