Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 253 PM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

DISCUSSION. We entered a lull in the precipitation activity this afternoon. Some isolated showers and thunderstorms have waxed and waned at times across the deep Gulf waters. Otherwise, within the last hour a narrow line just north of the lower Keys have started to come alive with showers and thunderstorms. Thus far none of the precipitation beyond this morning has fallen at any of our island communities. Had to adjust PoPs downward this afternoon as rain cooled air has all but stabilized the air mass across the Florida Keys.

Looking beyond the Florida Keys, a surface cold front has stalled across north central Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. This feature will remain bottled up to our north, eventually dissipating over the weekend. Aloft a low and mid level trough remains draped across the area, which continues to bring relatively deep moisture. However the drier air is not too far off. This morning's sounding showed decent dry air above 500 mb and even looking at the satellite derived PWat products, we can see that the dry air extends down to the surface behind said aforementioned cold front. Rain chances through the end of the week and into the weekend will remain at or slightly above normal.

As we go into the weekend, the trough will break down and a modified continental air mass will push into the region thanks to a continental high pushing east into the southeast U.S. by late Saturday and early Sunday. This will cause our winds to turn from the northeast Sunday and continuing into early next week. Temperature wise, we won't see high/low temps budge hardly at all. Dew points on the other hand look to bottom out near 70 Monday and Tuesday which will take the edge off the humidity and thereby muggy conditions. Starting Monday, drier air will filter in behind said high and lower rain chances down to 20 percent. This will persist into early next week as the dry air remains in place.

MARINE. Light and variable winds prevail across all waters this afternoon and will continue through the overnight. Expect light and variable winds to persist through Saturday. Thereafter, high pressure will settle across the southeast U.S. and allow for breezes to freshen into the gentle to moderate range.

AVIATION. The 12Z KKEY RAOB sampled gently veering southwesterly winds from the SFC to 700 mb, plentiful moisture, no dry layers, moderate ML instability, and weak inhibition. The Lower Keys cloud line should go through its thundery paces for the next hour or so (through 20- 21Z), and may propagate to the east of Big Pine towards MTH. Weak steering this evening and overnight should limit the propagation of storms from Cuba and South Florida. Cloud lines should be possible again on Friday.

CLIMATE. In 1931, the daily record rainfall of 2.10" was recorded in Key West. Precipitation records date back to 1871.
