Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Miami FL 930 AM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021

UPDATE.

Another dry and pleasant start across South Florida this morning as a dry airmass continues to remain established across the region as a ridge of high pressure builds over the Southeastern United States. The 12z RAOB sounding from this morning depicts a substantial amount of dry air in the vertical column, indicative of an atmosphere that remains quite stable and not conducive for convective development. Aside from a few isolated showers over the Atlantic waters earlier this morning, the radar continues to remain quiet over our area. No major forecast changes were made at this time.

PREV DISCUSSION. (Issued 636 AM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021)

AVIATION(12Z TAFS) .

Mostly dry and VFR conditions expected through the forecast cycle. Light and variable winds before sunrise will increase to 5-10kt out of the ENE/NE by mid morning. Convection remains unlikely today with the exception of the Atlantic waters which may see isolated showers.

PREV DISCUSSION . (Issued 306 AM EDT Tue Sep 28 2021)

SHORT TERM .

(Today through Wednesday) .

Expansive surface ridging emanating from the coastal Carolinas will continue to advect a drier airmass over the region. RAP forecast soundings sample precipitable water indices of 1.0 to 1.3 in, which is around the 10th percentile for atmospheric moisture per sounding climatology. Additionally, modest mid-level subsidence will weaken corresponding lapse rates. These factors will continue to yield mostly dry conditions across the region, as the best chance for showers will be along the Atlantic waters and coastline. While temperatures will remain warm (upper 80s/lower 90s), dewpoints in the upper 60s/lower 70s will become realized for most of South Florida today.

Not much to speak of in terms of changes to the weather pattern for Wednesday; surface ridging will continue to suppress shower and thunderstorm chances. The best chances for isolated showers will continue to remain over far southeastern portions of the region, including the Atlantic waters.

Long Term (Wednesday night - Monday):

Models begin the long term with the remnants of a frontal boundary near the Florida straits, which gradually dissipates by late Thursday. Over the SE CONUS, a broad high pressure system seems to expand during the weekend, and helps in pushing another cold front into the Florida peninsula during the weeekend. This will bring an increase in moisture, enough for some isolated to scattered showers. Highest POPs reside over the eastern half of SoFlo on Friday with a NW flow in place, then between 25-35 percent across much of the area on Saturday as moisture becomes more widespread. Although dynamic parameters remain very low, can not rule out a possible thunderstorm or two during the afternoon hours on Friday and Saturday with daytime heating.

Model solutions show fair agreement in keeping the front over SoFlo nearly stationary over South Florida as it slowly dissipates through early Monday, with mainly scattered coverage each day.

High temperatures climb back into the low 90s by late this weekend, with slightly cooler values near the coast. Morning lows also warm up a little with values 70s over most areas by Friday morning. Highs this weekend will remain around 90 over most areas, except mid to upper 80s east coast areas with lows in the low-mid 70s.

MARINE .

Modest northeasterly flow will continue through much of this week. Isolated showers will be possible over the Atlantic waters through Wednesday, with shower/storm coverage gradually increasing by the end of the week across all waters. The Atlantic Seas will remain slightly elevated (around 2 to 4 feet) this week due to the moderate northeast winds. The Gulf seas will be 2 feet or less through this week.

BEACHES .

A moderate risk of rip currents exists along the Atlantic beaches today, as moderate northeasterly flow continues. As winds retain an onshore component for the remainder of this week, an elevated risk of rip currents will persist through this week and may linger into the weekend.
