Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Brownsville TX 405 AM CST Sun Jan 16 2022

.SHORT TERM (Today through Monday): Surface high pressure will settle across deep south Texas and northeast Mexico today and winds will be considerably lighter compared to yesterday (read the Public Information Statement that was issued last night for the wind reports from yesterday) except across the lower Texas coast this morning. The pressure gradient will relax across the lower Texas coast this afternoon and winds will diminish across the coastal sections of deep south Texas later today. Temperatures will continue to be below normal today even with the mostly clear skies across the area this afternoon. Tonight clear skies and light winds will provide ideal radiational cooling across the CWA late tonight into early Monday morning. With very dry dewpoints across the area currently . the potential for a light freeze is likely across the northern portions of deep south Texas Therefore. will go ahead and issue a freeze watch for portions of the northern ranchlands including northern Hidalgo County and inland Willacy County as lows could reach freezing for at least two hours across the northern ranchlands by Mon morning In addition. would not be surprised to see some patchy frost across the northern ranchlands by Mon morning. At this time . freezing temperatures are not expected across the Rio Grande Valley but cannot rule out isolated spots reaching freezing for an hour or less by Mon morning. Temperatures will be warmer Monday as an onshore flow develops by Mon afternoon.

As far as coastal hazards . have extended the high risk of rip currents along the lower Texas coast through this afternoon as seas will remain high offshore the lower Texas coast today. In addition . have extended the high surf advisory along the lower Texas coasts through 12 noon today as swells in the surf will range from 3 to 6 feet this morning before diminishing this afternoon.

.LONG TERM (Monday Night through Saturday): A nearly zonal flow aloft and surface high pressure across the Gulf will maintain tranquil conditions across deep south Texas through midweek. Warm days and cool to mild nights are expected through Wednesday as onshore flow prevails. The pressure gradient will strengthen on Tuesday as surface low pressure develops across the Plains leading to breezy conditions, mainly along the coast, Tuesday afternoon. A strong 500mb trough over the Great Lakes region Wednesday will swing eastward and push a cold front through deep south Texas Wednesday night into Thursday. Isolated to scattered showers are expected to develop along and ahead of the front. Strong cold air advection and overrunning conditions are expected through the end of the work week. Uncertainty continues late in the period as the GFS maintains rain chances through the weekend as the ECMWF dries the region out by Saturday. Will lean towards a blend of the GFS/ECMWF and NBM for pops and temperatures through the period.

.MARINE (Today through Monday): Seas were near 11 feet with north to northwest winds near 29 knots with gusts to near 37 knots at buoy020 at 3:00 am Sunday. Will let Gale Warnings across the offshore waters continue through 9 am Sunday as very strong northwest winds will continue across the offshore waters this morning. The pressure gradient will begin to relax across the coastal waters this afternoon as high pressure settles across deep south Texas and northeast Mexico today. Strong northwest winds will continue across the bay waters this morning before diminishing this afternoon so will extend SCA for the Laguna Madre through 12 noon today. Will replace Gale Warnings offshore with an SCA from 9 am to 3 pm for the nearshore waters and from 9 am to 6 pm for the offshore waters. Winds will diminish across the offshore waters this afternoon but seas will remain high through most of the afternoon. Winds will become light and variable across the coastal waters tonight with a weak pressure gradient across the lower Texas coast. Light east to southeast winds will develop across the coastal waters Monday as the surface ridge begins to move eastward across the northwest Gulf of Mexico Mon afternoon.

Monday Night through Thursday Night: High pressure across the western Gulf will maintain favorable marine conditions through Monday night. Onshore flow will begin to increase on Tuesday as low pressure develops across the Plains. Exercise caution or small Craft Advisories may be needed on the Gulf waters Tuesday night. The pressure gradient weakens on Wednesday ahead of an approaching cold front. The next cold front is expected to move off the lower Texas coast Wednesday night into Thursday. Small craft advisories are likely on the bay and Gulf waters Thursday into Friday.
