Area Forecast Discussion . UPDATED National Weather Service Brownsville TX 617 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021

DISCUSSION. Updated for latest aviation discussion below.

AVIATION. Currently, mostly clear skies are being observed across Deep South Texas. VFR conditions will continue through the TAF period with light southeasterly winds. These light winds will continue through the period though BRO could see more moderate southeasterly winds Monday afternoon.

PREV DISCUSSION. /issued 257 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021/

SHORT TERM (Tonight through Monday Night): Pleasant weather continues across Deep South Texas with a ridge of high pressure settling into the Southeast at the surface and the mid level ridge easing slowly into the Gulf of Mexico. Southeasterly onshore flow around the surface ridge will increase moisture through Monday, maybe enough for a couple of showers or isolated thunderstorms to develop along the seabreeze Monday afternoon. Near normal highs in the low 90s are expected today and Monday, with slightly below normal lows tonight due to radiational cooling under clear skies and near normal lows Monday night. Heat indices will remain below 100 through the short term.

LONG TERM (Tuesday through Sunday): The global models are in good agreement with the 500mb low across New Mexico and Colorado Tuesday lifting northward as a 500mb longwave trough develops across the western United States Tuesday into Wednesday. Meanwhile . a 500mb shortwave trough is progged to move across south Texas Tuesday through Wednesday. This will provide a chance of showers and thunderstorms across deep south Texas Tuesday and Wednesday mainly along the seabreeze front Tues afternoon and Wed afternoon. Another upper level trough is expected to move across south Texas Thursday continuing to provide a chance of rain across the CWA. Rain chances should increase towards the end of the end into the weekend as the 500mb trough across the southwest U.S. begins to cut-off as a low across Arizona/New Mexico. The GFS is very bullish with rainfall ahead of this feature to the northwest of the CWA Thurs night into Friday. Will need to keep an eye on future GFS model runs on the potential for heavy rainfall but the current GEFS is not advertising any heavy rainfall across our area through the rest of the forecast period. A weak cold front is expected to move into south Texas Saturday and possibly move into the Rio Grande Valley before stalling on Sunday. The boundary will be a focus for showers and thunderstorms warranting high rain chances through the weekend.

MARINE (Now through Monday Night): High pressure across the Gulf of Mexico eases east slowly through Monday night, with a weak trough of low pressure kicking up a few offshore showers and thunderstorms into Monday night. Light east to southeasterly flow continues across the lower Texas coast with persistent ESE flow across the Gulf gradually building swell into late Monday. A light to moderate chop on the bay and low to moderate seas are expected through the short term with no SCEC or SCA conditions.

Tuesday through Friday . Light to moderate southeast winds will prevail across the coastal waters Tuesday before increasing across the offshore waters Tues night to SCEC conditions as the pressure gradient increases briefly across the western Gulf of Mexico. The pressure gradient will weaken slightly Wednesday with low pressure across the Texas panhandle. Moderate southeast winds will prevail across the lower Texas coast Wednesday into Thursday as a weak cold front moves into northwest Texas Thursday. The pressure gradient should weaken across the coastal waters Friday as the front stalls and another weak cold front moves into east Texas. Light to moderate east to southeast winds should prevail across the western Gulf of Mexico on Friday.
