PREV DISCUSSION. /issued 744 PM CDT Mon Sep 27 2021/

DISCUSSION . Updated for latest aviation discussion below.

AVIATION . The large 500 mb closed low over the Desert SW will start to open up over the next 24 hours and this will start to erode away the ridge axis in place over the RGV. The last few BRO soundings indicate that the PWAT values over the region have started to increase with this evenings PWAT reaching 1.82 inches. Daytime heating has fired up a couple of showers over northern Hidalgo/southern Brooks Counties this evening. So expect an increased potential for some sea breeze driven showers tomorrow afternoon. Accordingly, will maintain a mention of PROB30 groups for tomorrow afternoon mainly for the HRL and BRO airports. Otherwise, will maintain VFR conditions throughout the upcoming 24 hours for the RGV airports.

PREV DISCUSSION . /issued 318 PM CDT Mon Sep 27 2021/

SHORT TERM (Tonight through Tuesday Night): A 500mb ridge is expected to continue to bring drier conditions to the CWA tonight into tomorrow. Chances of isolated showers and thunderstorms over the coastal waters are possible tomorrow during the day where deep tropical moisture is located. The ridge currently situated over Texas starts to move eastward through the day Tuesday while a trough moves in its place. The GFS/ECMWF have precipitation moving into the area around 03Z Wednesday with a possibility of a greater chances of rain over the northern CWA in the Ranchlands. Coastal waters will also see an increase in precipitation chances as the trough moves east. Daytime highs and lows will be around normal through the short term period.

LONG TERM (Wednesday through Monday): The global models continue to be in fairly good agreement with the 500mb trough across the western United States Wednesday and a couple of shortwave troughs moving across portions of south and east Texas Wednesday into Thursday. Unfortunately the models differ with rain chances Wednesday and Thursday with the ECMWF continuing to prog higher chances of showers and thunderstorms across deep south Texas than the GFS. The rest of the forecast period will depend on the 500mb trough/500mb across the southwest United States Friday moving across the central and southern plains Saturday. The GFS continues to advertise heavy rainfall amounts across portions of west- central and southwest Texas Friday into Fri night. Actually the GFS has higher rain chances Saturday than the ECMWF and about the same for Sunday. Will continue to mention a chance of showers and thunderstorms through the rest of the week into the weekend with rain chances increasing Thursday and Friday. The decent chance of showers and thunderstorms will continue through the weekend into early next week with abundant low to mid level moisture across the area and the broad 500mb trough developing across the central and eastern U.S. Saturday into Sunday.

MARINE (Tonight through Tuesday night): Due to a 500mb ridge, light to moderate southeasterly winds dominate with low to moderate seas expected. Isolated showers and thunderstorms possible tomorrow with an increase in POPs as the trough moves through Tuesday evening. Seas also increase as well Tuesday night with wave heights from 3 to 5 feet.

Wednesday through Saturday . Moderate southeast winds will prevail across the coastal waters Wednesday through Thursday as low pressure across the lee side of the Rockies Wednesday brings a weak cold front into the Texas panhandle Thursday. The moderate southeast winds will continue Friday before backing to the east and diminishing Saturday as the front across northwest Texas Friday stalls across and the pressure gradient weakens across the lower Texas coast Saturday.
