Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 717 PM EST Tue Dec 7 2021

UPDATE. The main forecast challenge continues to be fog . both areas of sea fog and the potential for radiational fog developing inland overnight. Similar to last night, areas of sea fog were still present on visible satellite imagery just before sunset, although the patches were considerably smaller tonight. Southerly flow over the eastern Gulf of Mexico is expected to increase after midnight tonight and should help sea fog redevelop, which could shift onshore through Wednesday morning, mainly from around the Tampa Bay area north along the Nature Coast.

As for radiational fog inland, the main limiting factor will be the layer of cirrus clouds moving across the state, which could temporarily slow the fog development inland, mostly over the northern half of the forecast area. While this is not likely to prevent radiational fog entirely, it could delay the fog event until after midnight. As a result of this uncertainty, a Dense Fog Advisory has not been issued for land areas yet, but that could change quickly once the fog timing becomes more clear.

AVIATION. Areas of sea fog shifting onshore along the coast will be possible through Wednesday morning, as well as radiational fog developing inland after midnight. While these areas of fog and low stratus are expected to create MVFR and IFR/LIFR conditions during the overnight period, fog may take longer to develop than it did Monday night due to weaker southerly flow over the waters and more cirrus clouds inland.

MARINE. Just before sunset, patchy sea fog was still present on visible satellite imagery and on beach cameras from around Bradenton Beach northward through the Nature Coast. Due to sunset and a layer of cirrus clouds, these areas of sea fog are now harder to track, but an increase in southerly flow after midnight is likely to fuel redevelopment of sea fog through after sunrise Wednesday morning, and the Marine Dense Fog advisory has been extended through 10 AM Wednesday morning. Sea fog will continue to be a threat each day through the rest of the week. Otherwise, winds will remain below 15 knots with seas of no more than 2 feet.
