Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 240 PM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

DISCUSSION. Amplified pattern aloft in place over CONUS with a cutoff mid/upper low over the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley regions sandwiched between W Atlantic and central CONUS ridging. Shortwave drops SE across Nrn Plains on Fri-Sat and reinforces E CONUS troughing over the weekend after cutoff low opens and ejects NE, followed by a less amplified shortwave dropping SE off the NE U.S. and Mid- Atlantic seaboard on Mon-Tue before ridging sets up over E CONUS thru remainder of the week. At the surface, a frontal boundary has been driven into the central peninsula this afternoon south of the surface low pressure system associated with the cutoff low to our north. Expect the boundary to more or less meander over the southern half of the peninsula for the next couple of days as mid/upper support lifts NE and flow aloft becomes parallel until the E CONUS trough is reinforced over the weekend, likely providing the push to shunt the boundary south of the state as a surface high builds over the SE CONUS and remains in place much of next week.

As for what we can expect across our area as a result, the primary difference over the coming days will be less humid conditions for much of the area and afternoon high temps about 3-5 degrees cooler over parts of the Nature Coast this afternoon and Friday. Otherwise afternoon highs will remain around normal for this time of year throughout most of the next week, in the upper 80s/lower 90s. Overnight lows will dip a little below climatological normals Friday into next week, particularly across the Nature Coast where lows in the low/mid 60s are expected tonight/Friday morning while upper 60s/lower 70s are likely for the central peninsula up to the mid 70s further south. Lows hover in the mid 60s/mid 70s range Sat-Sun mornings before upper 60s spread as far south as interior southern locations Mon-Thu mornings next week as high pressure settles over the SE U.S.

Despite cooler/drier air working its way into the peninsula over the coming days, enough moisture and instability are expected to remain in place south of the frontal boundary to support at least scattered shower/storm activity for the next few afternoons until the boundary moves south of the state. This activity is expected to remain primarily south of Interstate 4 into next week, with PoPs gradually diminishing from the 50-60 percent range today-Sat afternoon down to around the 20-30 percent range next week. Afternoon PoPs (20-30%) may try to creep back northward across the area around mid week next week but at this point in time it remains too early to determine specifics.

AVIATION. Brief MVFR cigs/vsbys possible this afternoon across southern terminals as convection ahead of frontal boundary over the central peninsula overspreads individual terminals. Otherwise VFR expected with NW'ly winds around 10 knots or less at northern terminals becoming NE overnight while southern terminals remain W'ly to lgt/vrb thru tonight before becoming NE'ly on Friday.

MARINE. A weak cold front over the eastern Gulf of Mexico expected to stall out across the central and southern coastal zones into the weekend. Wind speeds along the boundary expected to remain below cautionary levels and continue subsiding into the evening. Showers and a few storms will continue to be possible along and ahead of the frontal boundary, producing locally gusty winds in the vicinity of the storms. The front will push south of Florida during the second half of the weekend, keeping rain chances low into early next week.

FIRE WEATHER. No relative humidity concerns through the weekend.
