Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL 246 AM EDT Fri Sep 24 2021

DISCUSSION. A potent shortwave trough over the Great Lakes region will lift northeast and away today, allowing the recent cold front to stall out across southern Florida through Saturday. A drier air mass behind the front will keep rain chances minimal across the Nature Coast today and Saturday, but enough moisture is lingering along and to the south of the boundary to allow isolated to scattered showers and storms from around Interstate 4 south both days, mainly during the afternoon and evening. Temperatures and dew points will be noticeably cooler and drier over the Nature Coast, but any difference will be minimal from around the Interstate 4 corridor south.

During the weekend, another shortwave trough will swing through the eastern US, giving the stalled frontal boundary a secondary push and allowing it to pass through south Florida. This will usher the drier airmass even farther south, with only isolated showers or storms expected each day from Sunday through Wednesday, mainly over southwest Florida. Although afternoon temperatures will not cool off noticeably, the less humid air will allow morning lows to drop a few degrees from what has been felt recently. By Thursday, atmospheric moisture will begin to rebound, allowing a few more showers and storms to develop during the afternoon through early evening hours.

AVIATION. Generally VFR conditions will hold through the rest of the morning, although patchy MVFR ceilings cannot be completely ruled out through just after sunrise. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will develop again this afternoon, mainly over southwest Florida around KPGD, KFMY, and KRSW, with brief periods of reduced flight categories and gusty winds possible as storms approach individual terminals.

MARINE. A stalled frontal boundary will linger across southern Florida through the rest of the week and the first half of the weekend, with high pressure building in north of the waters behind the front. This will favor generally northeast to east winds holding around 15 knots or less through early next week. Isolated to scattered showers and storms will be possible each day through at least Sunday, mainly from around the Tampa Bay south.

FIRE WEATHER. No relative humidity concerns through the next several days.
