AVIATION /06Z TAFs/.

VFR conditions will prevail through majority of the period with brief MVFR ceilings (LRD/COT) and visibilities (ALI/VCT) between 09Z and 15Z this morning. Increased dewpoints and the dewpoint depression down to 2-3 degrees already with calm winds, may lead to IFR vsby for ALI. Expect improving conditions through the morning, with sustained southeast winds 10-12 knots gusting up to 18 knots in the afternoon for CRP/ALI. Did not include any mention of showers at this time as coverage is expected to be isolated near and over the Coastal Bend with low confidence of occurrence in the vicinity of any terminals.

PREV DISCUSSION. /Issued 343 PM CDT Sun Sep 26 2021/

SHORT TERM (Tonight through Monday Night) .

Visible satellite imagery shows a surface trough over the western Gulf of Mexico from 280 miles east to 200 miles southeast of Brownsville, moving slowly to the northwest. GOES image of total precipitable water shows PW values around 2 inches. This trough will move into the coastal waters by 12Z Monday and into the middle and upper Texas coast shortly after 18Z. Most of the moisture associated with this feature will be advected northward into the upper Texas coast Monday. Some moisture will be available over the Mid-coast region for isolated convection to be possible Monday. Rest of south Texas will remain dry as region will still be under the influence of a mid level ridge with highs slightly above normal.

The ridge will move to the east Monday night. A mid level low will slowly move across New Mexico Monday and Monday night. A weak short wave trough will move out of northern Mexico into the Rio Grande plains and Hill Country Monday night. Expect convection will develop over the higher terrain of northern Mexico Monday afternoon. But expect activity will diminish as it moves toward the Rio Grande as storms move into region of less instability and increasing convective inhibition. Will show silent 10% PoPs for western Brush Country Monday night.

LONG TERM (Tuesday through Sunday) .

The long term period begins with a mid-level low centered near the NM/CO border, de-amplified ridging over the Great Plains and a strong low well to the north in eastern Canada with broad troughing over the eastern half of the CONUS. In general, these features will progress easterly through out the remainder of the week.

The aforementioned Rocky Mountain low will progress northeasterly and will send several shortwaves across the Southern Plains that will surge towards S. TX. The GFS is quite bullish on PVA for our CWA compared to other deterministic models. Considering the latest run of the GFS is less progressive with the amount of energy reaching South Texas, have gone a little drier with the PoPs. Upper level support from a subtropical jet will be displaced by a strengthening upper level high and ridging to our south Friday. After which, CAPE values steadily decline over the weekend and into next week. Have decreased PoPs and thunder chances starting Saturday. However, with another Desert Southwestern low sending waves of energy across TX and with PWAT's expected to remain above the 75th percentile, have kept rain chances going until the end of the period.

Temperatures this week will be above normal but with increasing storm and cloud coverage will see a cooling trend through the weekend. Heat indices on Tuesday and Wednesday near 105 will subside below advisory levels as temperatures cool despite the low level moisture.

MARINE .

A weak trough axis over the western Gulf of Mexico will move northwest into the coastal waters early Monday morning. Isolated to scattered showers and storms will occur with the passage of the trough late tonight into Monday. A weak onshore flow is expected tonight and Monday. A weak to moderate onshore will develop Monday night with isolated to scattered showers possible again.

Weak to moderate onshore flow will become moderate overnight daily through Saturday when flow turns easterly. Scattered thunderstorms expected daily increasing in coverage to numerous mid to late week.
