AVIATION. 18Z TAFs

Clear skies and VFR conditions will continue across south Texas during the period. Light east-northeast winds will become variable over the coastal plains during overnight, then become light southeast Friday morning.

PREV DISCUSSION . /Issued 407 AM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021/

SHORT TERM (Today through Friday) .

After a very pleasant night, a beautiful day is in store for South Texas today under sunny to mostly sunny skies. Temperatures are currently in the 50s to 60s across most inland locations, which hasn't occurred since April and May of this year! Highs today will be a degree or so warmer than yesterday, remaining rather comfortable and in the mid 80s to lower 90s. Tonight, it will be a bit warmer as well as surface high pressure shifts to the east allowing for a more easterly flow to resume over the region and begin bringing back slightly higher dewpoints. Nevertheless, another "cool" night is expected with lows ranging from the upper 50s to the mid 60s. Temperatures on Friday will be very similar to today with highs in the mid 80s to low 90s. Winds will remain light and variable through the morning, before becoming east/southeast in the afternoon/evening hours. A generally light onshore flow will continue tonight through Friday.

LONG TERM (Friday Night through Wednesday) .

Moisture will be on the return for the beginning of the long term period. Dewpoints are back into the low to mid 60s by Friday night and continue to increase as we head into the weekend. Mid level ridging shifts east this weekend as a low pressure center approaches. Models have changed a bit with respect to this low over the past several runs, and now lift the low north near or even west of the Texas Panhandle. Some mid-level energy likely still moves over our region, but it'll be more limited than earlier runs. Another change noted from 24 hours ago, is the initial increase in moisture from the Gulf of Mexico shifts more to the northwest than west. This could limit rain chances for Monday to mainly eastern areas, but should see moisture increase over the rest of the area Tuesday into Wednesday, so still holding chance PoPs these days. Temperatures return to near or slightly above normal temperatures over the weekend and into Monday, but the increased moisture will likely temper that a degree or two by Tuesday and Wednesday.

MARINE .

Weak to moderate northeast flow will continue across the coastal waters today, before becoming weak out of the east tonight. A generally light easterly flow will persist into Friday as a surface high pressure ridge remains over the northern Gulf of Mexico extending west into South Texas. Light east winds Saturday become light to moderate out of the southeast by early in the week. A weak trough will move into the western Gulf of Mexico Sunday and into south Texas Monday. This will lead to an increase in moisture and a chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday into Monday.
