Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX 1226 PM CDT Thu Oct 21 2021

AVIATION [18Z TAF Issuance].

VFR conditions will persist through the remainder of the afternoon following the dissipation of last night's fog and low cigs. However, with little change to the pattern expected and ample low level moisture present once again, we should likely again see visibilities and cigs begin to drop after 06Z as fog begins to develop. The metro and coastal sites appear likely to once again experience IFR visibilities by around 09Z, though a drop to LIFR/VLIFR conditions is not out of the question should periods of dense fog develop. Visibilities and cigs will improve by around 15Z tomorrow morning with the advent of daytime heating and VFR conditions are expected thereafter.

PREV DISCUSSION /Issued 451 AM CDT Thu Oct 21 2021/.

SHORT TERM [Today through Friday Night].

First off - fog this morning. Radiation fog at a premium this morning with calm winds mostly clear skies and drier profile aloft. Have expanded the Dense Fog Advisory into the northeastern counties as well. Weak ridging remains over the area today with light winds and as the fog burns off mid morning expect skies to be partly cloudy with plenty of sunshine and allowing temperatures to warm into the mid 80s to around 90 - about 10 degrees warmer than normal. Temperatures will again fall into the lower 70s this evening and anticipate another round of fog over the area. Rain chances start to creep in over the Gulf and then into the coastal areas on Friday but chances are still low in the 15-30 percent range. Temperatures climb back into he mid/upper 80s on Friday with generally zonal flow aloft over SETX that will start to buckle slightly Friday night as a weak/very weak s/w moves in from the west which may help to nudge up rain chances.

45

LONG TERM [Saturday through Thursday].

Weak mid-level ridge over the Plains will continue to dominate the weather pattern across Southeast TX. At the surface, return flow from the departing high pressure will continue to bring warmer and more humid conditions Saturday and Sunday. Isolated coastal showers are expected in the morning, then developing inland with seabreeze interaction. Daytime temperatures will generally be in the 80s, with slightly warmer readings on Sunday. This is 5 to 10 degrees above normal for this time of year. It will feel a bit muggy on Sunday compared to previous days, with sfc dewpoints reaching the low 70s across most of the region.

After a brief lull in precipitation on Monday, the main weather story for the upcoming week will be the passage of a cold front by midweek. Latest deterministic guidance and most of its ensembles are in better agreement with the timing of this FROPA. The 00Z GFS continues to be the most aggressive solution, bringing in a corridor of Pacific moisture (possibly a tropical cyclone) ahead of the boundary on Tuesday evening. Deterministic ECMWF and Canadian ignore this possibility and are more focused on bringing the closed upper low and its associated front into the region by early Wednesday. With that said, have increasing precipitation chances from late Tuesday into Thursday, placing the time of arrival of the front (wind shift) on Wednesday. Behind the front, breezy conditions will be possible, especially along the coast. 05

MARINE.

Areas of dense fog will continue to develop along the islands and bays through mid morning. Otherwise, benign marine conditions are expected today with light winds and seas. High pressure to our northeast will continue to bring east to southeast flow. This pattern will result in isolated to scattered showers and storms through the weekend. It will be breezy after Saturday with conditions approaching SCEC criteria at times. 05
