Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX 1236 PM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021

AVIATION [18Z TAF Issuance].

VFR with winds generally out of the east/southeast 5-10 knots becoming light and variable overnight, before southeast winds return again in the morning.

PREV DISCUSSION /Issued 614 AM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021/.

SHORT TERM [Today Through Friday Night] .

High pressure was located over SE TX this morning and this feature will drift east through Friday Night. A light and variable wind will become more easterly today and eventually SE as the high drifts east. The air mass over the region is very dry so would expect a large diurnal range in temperatures today. 850 mb temperatures today are progged to remain between 11 C - 13 C which translate to surface temps in the lower/middle 80's. The light east wind tonight will help moisten the boundary layer a bit and surface dew points look a little warmer so am expected MinT values to be a bit warmer than this morning's values. MinT values will fall into the upper 50's most areas with a few locally cooler spots (KCXO) and areas inside the loop warmer. Skies are expected to remain generally clear although as the temperature falls to the dew point, would not be surprised if there is some patchy shallow ground fog. SREF ensembles not showing much potential so will leave mention of fog out of the wx grids. 850 mb temps warm a few degrees and reach 14 C- 15 C by Friday so MaxT values should warm into the mid/upper 80's. Soundings don't show much in the way of saturation so no rain is expected but a few more clouds will be possible by Friday afternoon. 43

LONG TERM [Saturday Through Wednesday Night] .

High pressure will remain overhead through Sunday and begin pushing east, suppressing rain chances across our area until then. Temperatures will gradually climb back to the upper 80s by Sunday and higher dewpoints will sneak back in as well, with areas south of I-10 reaching 60-70 deg DPs. This is mainly due to a sfc inverted trough over the western Gulf migrating north and into our area by late Sunday, driving up moisture and PWs across our southern CWA.

Global models still show a surge of moisture from the SW Gulf migrating into our area while a mid-level trough/low from the SW US pushes east and into Central TX. Weak shortwaves wrap around this feature and help invigorate convection across SE TX. The GFS shows a weaker 500mb trough while the ECMWF and Canadian show a stronger 500mb closed low that pushes further east into TX. Therefore, rain chances and rainfall amounts will depend on how strong and how far east this mid-level trough/low pushes into TX. Gradually nudged up PoPs into early next week, but capped it at 60% for now. Activity should peak in the afternoon with daytime heating, but chance showers and t'storms still possible overnight south of I-10 through at least Wednesday.
