Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Jacksonville FL 121 PM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

AVIATION. [Through 18Z Friday]

VFR conds through the period. NW to N winds 8-10 knots this afternoon become light winds after sunset. Some coastal Cumulus development possible in the 15-18z time frame but likely at VFR levels and too early for addition to the TAF set at this time. Airmass too dry for much in the way of fog formation tonight.

PREV DISCUSSION [755 AM EDT].

NEAR TERM [Today through Tonight]. Cold front now pushing se across ne Fl with dissipating showers will be south of the area by dawn. Northwest to north winds today will advect in much drier air resulting in decreasing cloudiness along with lower humidity levels and cooler temperatures. High temperatures will be in the upper 70/low 80s over se Ga and low to mid 80s across ne Fl. Tonight winds will drop off with clear skies which will allow temperatures to fall into the mid 50s over inland se Ga and in the upper 50s to mid 60s over ne Fl.

SHORT TERM. [Friday through Saturday] . Sfc high pressure ridge will be located from the northern Gulf coast to the Appalachians and then slowly weaken through the period, migrating a bit southwest, while the sfc front that passed through the area Wed night becomes nearly stationary to the east and south of the area. Much drier and cooler airmass will stay over the area through this period making for pleasant days and nights. Sfc flow expected to be north-northeast on Friday. On Saturday, with a weaker pressure gradient and an afternoon thermal trough inland areas will make for more varied winds winds but generally with a north component. With PWATs well under 1 inch, air-mass too dry to have mention of precip. Temps will be below normal Friday with highs in the lower to mid 80s, and moderating a bit on Saturday with highs in the mid to upper 80s. Lows range from mid 50s over inland southeast GA to mid to upper 60s southeast zones. With light sfc winds and clear skies, may see some patchy radiation fog early Saturday and Sunday mornings.

LONG TERM. [Sunday through Wednesday] . General pattern through the period shows broad mid/upper level troughing off the east coast of the U.S. with weak mid level ridging over the Gulf of Mexico into the lower MS valley. Sfc high pressure will be located over the southeast U.S. and should slowly shift a bit southward during the period. A weak trough/front may slide down the southeast U.S. coast Wed-Thu re-enforcing drier air over the area but at this time looks uncertain if this will happen.

Otherwise, long term period will be dry, but some moderation in dewpoints anticipated as daily onshore flow from the Atlantic subtly increases low level moisture. Patchy late night fog may occur inland areas due to light sfc winds and mostly clear skies at night.

High temperatures will be near normal this period. Lows will slowly moderate through the period, and trend closer to normal.

MARINE. Cold front across the northeast Florida waters will push south of the waters early this morning. Northwest to north winds will increase to Caution levels today as wind speeds reach 15 to 20 knots along with building seas. Winds and seas will decrease Friday into the weekend as high pressure settles over the area.

Rip Currents: Moderate risk today through Friday as winds increase and become onshore while wind waves and swells build.

FIRE WEATHER. Marginally low dispersion over northeast FL today otherwise looking drier the next few days. Min RH values are forecast to drop to the around the mid to upper 30s inland today, and could potentially be lower on Friday based on a couple of model solutions.

HYDROLOGY. Minor flooding will continue through the weekend on the Santa Fe River and on parts of the St. Marys and Satilla Rivers.
