Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Jacksonville FL 920 PM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

UPDATE.

High pressure will build northwest of the region through Friday as a coastal trough slides southward down the Atlantic coast and shifts inland into Friday evening. Mostly clear skies tonight, dry air and light drainage winds will enable lows to fall into the 50s north of the I-10 corridor to low/mid 60s toward the St. Johns River Basin and Atlantic coast.

For the north and westside of the JAX area, this will be the first time temps have dipped into the 50s since June 1st.

MARINE.

NNW winds 10-15 kts will decrease after midnight to NNE around 10 kts as seas subside from 3-5 ft to 2-4 ft. Winds increase from the ENE near 15 kts into Friday afternoon trailing a coastal trough sliding down the SE Atlantic Bight.

Rip Currents: Moderate rip current risk Friday.

PREV DISCUSSION [751 PM EDT].

Near Term. /through Friday/ .

High pressure will be to the northwest through Friday, as front lingers to the east southeast of the region.

Drier air will continue to filter south into region, leading to another unseasonably cool night Tonight. Lows in the 50s will be common across inland areas of SE GA, with lows in the lower to middle 60s at the coast. For NE FL, lows in the 50s expected generally north and west of line from Gainesville to downtown Jacksonville, while lows could be as mild as upper 60s at the coast. Clear skies are expected for much of the area Tonight, but the exception will be southern counties closer to the boundary.

A dry day is expected for Friday, but a few more clouds expected South due to weak inverted troughing, and moisture increasing as flow becomes more onshore in the afternoon. Highs in the 80s forecast for Friday.

Short Term. /Friday night through Monday/ .

The high pressure center will be to the northwest early this period, then toward the north on Sunday, and northeast on Monday. Dry weather will persist this period, with mainly clear skies.

Another below normal night is expected Friday night. Lows in the middle 50s across interior portions of SE GA again, but it will be a bit milder than Thursday night elsewhere due to the flow becoming more onshore. A slow moderation in overnight lows is expected through this period, but the trend will continue to be below normal. Highs will be seasonal, with readings in the 80s.

Long Term. /Monday night through Thursday/ .

The high will slowly move to the east then southeast of the region this period, allowing a cold front to move south into region by Thursday. Most of this period will continue to be dry, due to subsidence under high and drier airmass in place. However, chances for precipitation will increase on Thursday due to expected frontal system.

Highs this period, will be near to a little above normal Tuesday and Wednesday, with sunshine expected. A little more cloud cover anticipated with front for Thursday, so afternoon highs may trend a little cooler.

Lows will continue to slowly moderate this period, with readings closer to normal by Wednesday night.

AVIATION. [Through 00Z Saturday]

Prevailing VFR conditions with some lingering mid clouds near GNV and SGJ tonight. ENE winds 3-7 kts at coastal terminals will back NNW after 06z with speeds inland becoming light NNW < 3 kts. Winds increase down the coast through Friday afternoon with speeds 9-11 kts and coastal cumulus developing inland with bases 2.5-4 kft into Friday evening.
