Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service New Orleans LA 1236 PM CDT Thu Oct 21 2021

AVIATION (18Z TAF DISCUSSION). A band of thunderstorms will continue to impact KGPT with some IFR visibilities through 19z. After 19z, prevailing VFR conditions will take hold at all of the terminals and remain in place through the evening hours. Conditions look favorable for another round of fog and low stratus development at all of the terminals late tonight. IFR and LIFR conditions are forecast with the greatest restrictions expected at KMCB, KHDC, and KBTR. These conditions will likely peak between 10z and 14z before improving between 15z and 16z. PG

PREV DISCUSSION. /issued 956 AM CDT Thu Oct 21 2021/

MORNING UPDATE . The low stratus and dense fog continues to linger over metro Baton Rouge and parts of the River Parishes and Northshore this morning, but the fog and stratus is expected to clear over the next couple of hours as drier air begins to mix into the boundary layer. Have adjusted the weather and sky cover grids to account for this fog and stratus lingering a couple of hours longer than originally forecast.

Additionally, based on the 12z sounding and water vapor imagery analysis, the highest threat of convective development will be focused over the southern and eastern third of the forecast area including all of coastal Mississippi, coastal Louisiana and the offshore waters through the early afternoon hours. Water vapor imagery does show a surge of drier mid-level moving into the region, and this will likely advect in during the afternoon hours resulting in reduced convective risk across the entire forecast area by the late afternoon/early evening hours. The POP forecast has been tweaked to lower values over metro New Orleans and the Northshore for the rest of the day given the drier air advecting into the region. PG
