PREV DISCUSSION . /ISSUED 341 PM CDT Thu Sep 23 2021/

SHORT TERM [Through Friday Night] .

Today's short term forecast is brought to you be the word 'subsidence' with a surface high located in Northeast Texas, an 850 high over Houston County, and ridging moving into place above 700 mb. This is not really a surprise to anyone who's looked outside and seen the brilliant blue sky with nary a cloud to be seen. We even have to go several miles offshore over the Gulf before running into any marine stratocu.

Despite the relatively chilly start we got off to this morning, temperatures are already nearing the highs from yesterday afternoon, and has us on pace to be slightly warmer for this afternoon's highs. Expect pretty close to a repeat tonight - the main driver for any difference in the overnight low will come from the surface high sliding east, which will make winds more southeasterly than easterly, and help boost moisture - and the temperature floor tonight - a little bit. The difference isn't likely to be big, with most still expected to fall into the 50s, but look for overnight lows to be just a bit warmer than last night.

Tomorrow . well . there's not much more that can be said. Indications are that we may see some cirrus moving out of the area around sunrise, and a subtle mid-level shortwave trough moving in late in the afternoon hints that we'll see cirrus again perhaps in the late afternoon, or at least tomorrow night. This probably won't be enough to hold temps down, so highs tomorrow should meet/slightly exceed what we see today.

LONG TERM [Saturday Through Wednesday Night] .

The weekend should be a mainly dry one (POP-wise) with temperatures slowly warming. The return of onshore winds on Sun will also herald the return of increased dewpoints/low-level moisture from the Gulf. Highs this weekend will range from the mid and upper 80s inland and the lower 80s at the coast. Low temperatures Sat night could be our last "cool" one with lows ranging from the upper 50s for the north- ern CWA and to the mid 60s south. Lows for Sun night will be warmer with the range from the mid 60s north to around 70 south (as humid- ity levels begin to creep upward).

This influx of deep Gulf moisture is forecast to persist across the region for much of next week (with PWs progged at/around 1.8 to 2.1 inches). These surges of moisture, perhaps coinciding with the pas- sage of various embedded shortwaves (coming from around the base of the approaching upper trof) along with daytime heating/seabreeze or other surface boundaries/outflows are all pointing to a rather wet/ active week for next week. Timing of these said disturbances (along with how far east the upper trof tracks) look to be the main issues going forward. So for now, have kept with the 30 - 50% POPs already in the grids for this timeframe. Temperatures should return to more near normal levels next week outside all of this scattered activity (i.e. highs in the upper 80s and lows in the lower 70s). 41

FIRE WEATHER .

Dry air continues to dominate, with minimum relative humidity this afternoon likely to reach and even fall below the minimum RH values from yesterday afternoon. This will provide greater opportunity for increased fire behavior, particularly in the 1- and 10-hour fuels that are most responsive to changes in humidity. Fortunately as far as fire spread is concerned, winds are considerably lower than yesterday. The strongest winds are only around 10 mph, and many locations are seeing winds of 5 mph or less, even this afternoon when mixing is maximized.

From a smoke management point, the lack of winds through the mixing layer may permit smoke to collect in greater concentrations close to any burning or smoldering fires. Mitigating this, at least for actively burning fires, will be relatively high mixing heights, allowing for some decent vertical dispersion for the afternoon hours before the sun begins to set.

We should see fairly consistent conditions into the weekend, though humidity will gradually begin to increase from the coast to inland as high pressure slides east and onshore flow gets re-established. For points well inland, which are also the locations with the driest long term conditions, dry air is expected to cling until early next week.

Luchs

MARINE .

Offshore winds from earlier today are expected to continue shifting to the east this evening/tonight as high pressure continues to slow- ly drift east away from the area. This mostly light east flow along with subsiding seas to prevail through tomorrow into most of Sat . given the lingering influence of the surface high. This system will be far enough east by Sun for the return of SE winds across all the bays/coastal waters at that time. This generally light and moderate onshore flow will prevail for most of next week but the chances for unsettled weather will also be increasing. 41
