AVIATION.

For the 16/00Z TAFs, the cold front will continue moving toward the coast early this evening and will be offshore by the 01Z-03Z time period. Increasing and gusty N to NNE winds can be expected behind the front, especially closer to LBX and GLS. These winds will decrease significantly late tomorrow afternoon inland and tomorrow evening at the coast. For clouds, mainly just some cirrus to deal with for the entire package. 42

PREV DISCUSSION. /ISSUED 351 PM CDT Fri Oct 15 2021/

SHORT TERM [Tonight Through Saturday Night] .

A strong surface cold front is right at our doorstep this afternoon with the first taste of fall weather for SE TX arriving shortly. At the time of publication, the surface boundary was positioned just north of the Brazos Valley extending northeastward towards Palestine. A prefrontal trough ahead of the boundary has allowed for some scattered shower and thunderstorm activity this afternoon, which will continue into the early evening as the front pushes through the Houston metro area and barrier islands. A few isolated storms may produce some strong wind gusts with DCAPE values hovering around 1000 J/kg. Precipitation will be more likely closer to the coast where moisture availability is more widespread.

The frontal boundary should clear the coast in the next 3-4 hours, after which a strong northerly wind will develop. Wind gusts will approach 25 mph across inland areas and may reach up to 40 mph along the coast overnight and into tomorrow morning. Considering this, we have issued a Wind Advisory until early tomorrow afternoon for all coastal zones. Strong CAA will allow for a push of much cooler and drier air into the area, with overnight lows dropping around 20 degrees from last night at most locations. Values will reach the lower to mid 50s north of the Houston metro, while the metro area and coast will see lows in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Dew points will also steadily diminish, reaching the 40s by tomorrow afternoon area-wide.

Saturday is shaping up to be a gorgeous fall day with daytime highs reaching the mid 70s (cooler than last night's lows at most locations!). Clearing skies and gradually diminishing winds will provide some wonderful conditions for outdoor activities. Just don't forget to dig that jacket or sweater out of the closet, as overnight lows will remain cool, dipping further into the upper 40s to mid 50s.

LONG TERM [Monday Through Friday] .

Will be starting off Sunday on the cool side! High pressure over N TX will slowly drifting southeast toward LA by Monday morning. Very pleasant weather with mostly sunny skies to start but with a s/w approaches from the WSW and while moving through should bring in scattered high clouds through the afternoon/evening. High pressure continues to shift eastward Monday with east and southeasterly LL flow and NVA aloft so a gradual increase in LL moisture as the slightly modified continental airmass flows in off the northern/northwestern Gulf. Temperatures rebound on both max and mins with the WAA pattern taking hold though the moisture return will be slow given the deep Gulf penetration of the airmass. Transitioning Tuesday and Wednesday. Rain chances start to creep back in Wednesday night in the Gulf and then over SETX Thursday. And Thursday is a challenge because of course by that far out in time the guidance is somewhat split how these bring in the next cold front Thursday late. Moisture will have increased significantly prior to the FROPA and expect scattered storms to develop though not that confident yet on where . could be a line that moves through with the front or focused in the western areas as overrunning moisture saturates. Would not be shocked if rain chances go quite a bit in the Thursday PM/Friday time frame. This abundance of cloud cover and rain is going to play havoc with the temperature forecast and as of now that far out stayed close to the NBM but again the aforementioned reasoning applies and these could vary greatly. Welcome to frontal passages and timing issues. 45

MARINE .

Not a lot of change in the forecast . a strong cold front drives off the coast and ushers in strong northerly flow with impressive CAA. Winds should rapidly crank up to 20-30 knots sustained and frequent gusts of 35 knots over the warm Gulf waters will prevail mainly after 11 pm through 9 am. Gale warning has been issued and will stagger it coming down . first over the bays around 9 am and then Gulf waters by noon. Seas build to 7-10 feet offshore and will be slow to come down. Expect SCA conditions to follow in the wake of the Gale conditions through Saturday and possibly into mid Sunday morning. The strong offshore winds should drop tide levels on the outgoing low tide overnight and probably hamper any recovery Saturday. Winds gradually becoming northeast and east as high pressure slides off to the east on Monday. 45
