Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Lake Charles LA 404 PM CDT Sat Oct 23 2021

DISCUSSION. Started the day with dense fog only to see that break by the late morning hours as temperatures have climbed in the mid 80s most locations. There has been some storm activity in southeast Texas and the coastal waters as a large mass of moisture supported by and upper level shortwave is producing showers and a few thunderstorms around the lakes region. This will gradually spread into southern Louisiana and will continue on and off through the overnight hours. The upper level trof looks to be on top of us tomorrow and this will see an increase in storm activity across the region. As the shortwave trof exits to the east late in the day moisture will move into Mississippi shutting down the precip Sunday evening. But as there is no real frontal system with this activity temps will remain in the 60s overnight and 80s during the day and upper 80s by Monday.

Monday looks to be a typical Indian Summer day with skies partly cloudy and temperatures in the 80s. But on Tuesday a system will be moving off the rockies and into the plain states.

LONG TERM [Tuesday through Saturday].

At the start of the long term period, the forecast area will be located beneath weak ridging both at the surface and aloft. Through the day Tuesday, this ridge will gradually shift eastward, allowing a deepening trof of low pressure to build across the Southern Plains. Low end rain chances will return to the forecast by Tuesday afternoon, as low level moisture increases and upper level ridging decreases. Coverage should be fairly isolated Tuesday afternoon, which will allow highs to top out in the mid 80s.

Tuesday night into Wednesday, the pattern begins to change quickly as the trof over the Southern Plains continues to deepen and slides a cold front towards the forecast area. Frontal passage is currently expected to occur through the day Wednesday, however, rain chances will be on the increase by Tuesday night. Looks like convection will be somewhat scattered overnight, but will begin to fill in by the morning hours generally in a west to east pattern along and ahead of this frontal system. Thunderstorms are likely with frontal passage, but the chance for severe weather looks like it will be focused more to our east rather than across the CWA. Rain chances will taper off west to east Wednesday afternoon and evening behind the front, as cooler and drier air begins to surge into the forecast area.

Through the second half of the week into the weekend, dry and very pleasant weather is on tap as high pressure builds across the SERN CONUS. Main concern through this period will be gusty northwest winds both Thursday and Friday, especially along and south of the I- 10 corridor. Otherwise, the end of the forecast period looks very pleasant with daytime highs in the low to mid 70s and overnight lows in the low to mid 50s.
