Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Jacksonville FL 121 PM EDT Sat Oct 23 2021

AVIATION. [Through 18Z Sunday]

Reader's Digest version: VFR conditions through 18Z Sunday with no issues.

More detailed discussion: High pressure dominates the surface with some CI/CS overriding the region from the Gulf with cloud bases of 200-250 KFT. Coverage FEW to SCT today and BKN tonight into Sunday. Winds generally northerly today and easterly tomorrow less than 10 knots, becoming variable less than 5 knots overnight. Generally too dry for significant fog formation overnight.

PREV DISCUSSION [952 AM EDT].

NEAR TERM [Today through Tonight]. Weak cold front moving into ne Fl early this morning will shift south of the area around dawn. Areas of low clouds and fog over inland ne Fl will lift as the front advects in drier air. Light northwest winds this morning will become northeasterly this afternoon as high pressure builds in from the northwest. Skies will be mostly sunny today with temperatures reaching the lower 80s over se Ga and mid/upper 80s across ne Fl. Temperatures tonight will range from the lower 50s over interior se Ga to the low/mid 60s near the coast.

SHORT TERM. [Sunday through Monday night] . Fairly progressive pattern is continuing with sfc high pressure over the DELMARVA area Sunday morning that moves east quickly. This will ensure an easterly low level flow over the forecast area that then gradually increases in moisture with a slow veering wind profile in the low levels. Shortwave energy in mid levels over the Gulf of Mexico pushing east will allow for increased precip chances to our south around the stalled frontal boundary, but development of inverted sfc trough, and possibly weak low pressure, off the east coast of FL and veering flow will bring a slight chance of showers to the area, mainly northeast FL, and then southeast GA coastal areas Sunday night. Warm advection pattern off the Atlantic will result in highs above normal on Sunday and Sunday night. With light boundary layer winds and enough sfc moisture, some patchy fog and low clouds are anticipated late Sunday night into Monday morning.

Monday . shortwave energy in the levels across the eastern Gulf of Mexico and central FL will support frontal wave development off the east of FL that will likely shift east in tandem with the shortwave energy. With the best forcing southeast and east of the area, we only have slight chances for showers or storms, if that, for the local area. Temps will be above normal again, perhaps higher than Sunday due to the flow shifting sfc flow to the south and southwest as another weak cold front approaches from the northwest. This second front will move into our GA zones Monday night but forcing and moisture is limited so only slight chance for showers over parts of southeast GA.

LONG TERM. [Tuesday-Friday] . Front that moved into our area Monday night will finish moving through northeast FL Tuesday morning on northwest mid level flow, and then possibly push into central FL Tuesday aftn and evening. The air mass is too dry to support mentioning precip Tuesday. Highs on Tuesday will reflect the shallow, cooler airmass with highs a few degrees lower than on Monday, but still well into the 80s over northeast FL, and upper 70s to lower 80s in southeast GA. Meanwhile, a southern stream shortwave over Mexico will tend to phase into an amplified mid/upper trough moving through the Plains on Wed and Wed night. This next system is much stronger with parent low pressure system over the central Plains which will shift east- southeast to the Ohio Valley on Thu. Associated cold front will rapidly advance from TX on Wed to the southeast states on Thu, with triple point low pressure possible over nrn AL/GA area. Front that passed through our area Tue will work back northward on Wed while moisture advects from the southwest with the approaching cold front. With fair to good model agreement, low chance POPs for Wed will increase to likely Wed night and into early Thu. A decent fetch of moisture with PWATs climbing to around 2 inches and strong frontal forcing still suggests potential for strong to possibly severe storms along the cold front, and will continue to be monitored. Temperatures will trend above normal through Wednesday night, then closer to normal for Thursday. A significant push of cooler and drier air will advect into region behind the front for Thursday night through Friday. Portions of inland SE GA may not reach 70 for highs Friday.

MARINE. A weak cold front across the waters will push south of the area this morning as high pressure builds in from the northwest. High pressure will move off the east coast early next week with a cold front pushing south across the area on Tuesday. A stronger cold front accompanied by showers and thunderstorms will move through on Thursday.

Rip Currents: Moderate risk of rip currents this weekend as winds become onshore.
