Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX 352 PM CST Thu Jan 20 2022

SHORT TERM [Through Friday Night]. Widespread cloud cover and northerly winds behind the recent cold frontal passage have combined to produce a relatively chilly afternoon today across SE TX, with 3PM observations as low as the upper 30s in the Brazos Valley and in the lower/mid 40s elsewhere. Synoptically, an amplified midlevel trough axis continues to approach from the west, enhancing a weak coastal trough feature along the TX Coastal Bend and allowing for the development of scattered stratiform rain across the area this afternoon. While temperatures will dip to near or below freezing as this light rainfall continues into the evening and overnight, the presence of an elevated warm layer aloft will contribute to a messy period of potentially mixed phase precipitation during this time.

While model soundings remain in fairly good agreement in depicting robust saturation in the midlevels tonight as the main axis of precipitation shifts to along and south of the I-10 corridor, a warm level between approximately 1-2.5km aloft should prove sufficient to inhibit any widespread accumulating winter precipitation as near-surface temperatures approach the freezing level. That being said, there remains a slight chance for a mix of sleet and/or freezing rain to accompany rainfall through the early hours of tomorrow morning depending on the exact depth of this warm layer. Chances for freezing rain remain highest to the southwest of the Houston metro where the elevated warm layer should be less robust, particularly across Colorado, Wharton, and Jackson Counties. However, with land surface temperatures likely to remain near or above freezing, any accumulation of sleet and/or ice should be localized at most. Across locations north of the I-10 corridor, precipitation will be inhibited by the continued intrusion of drier air at low-levels and thus sleet/freezing rain are largely not of concern.

The main axis of rainfall should continue to push southward early tomorrow morning, with most precipitation after sunrise confined to the coastal waters. As drier air continues to push into the region, cloud cover should begin to diminish with mostly clear conditions developing during the evening hours. With stronger nocturnal radiative cooling as a result, Friday night should be the coldest period of the next week with lows dipping below freezing at most inland locations and remaining in the mid/upper 30s along the coast.

LONG TERM [Saturday Through Thursday]. A cool, albeit dry weekend will be on tap with sfc high pres and subtle mid level ridging in place. With the exception of the beaches, most areas will start out with freezing temps followed by a "warm-up" into the mid 50s under plenty of sunshine. Another freeze expected Sat night generally east of a College Station- Houston- Anahuac line. Expect a gradual increase in cloud cover from the southwest during the day Sunday with highs in the mid- upper 50s.

The next upper trof will be ejecting out of northern Mexico into TX during the day Monday. In advance, look for a coastal low to develop somewhere in the vicinity of the Matagorda Bay area. A rapid return of moisture is anticipated with PWs climbing to 1.0-1.5" as this occurs. Rain and tstms will develop and increase throughout the day in association with the coastal low, large scale lift from approaching upper trof and increasing favorable RRQ of jet position. Will need to keep a close eye on the track/position of the sfc low. ECMWF keeps it off the coast whereas some guidance such as the GFS & ICON tries to bring the warm sector inland. Fairly potent llvl veering wind would support some rotating storms in the vicinity of the warm front . but way too early to pinpoint the finer details.

This system should push east of the area late Monday night followed by a frontal passage during the day Tuesday & seasonable wx into midweek. As high pressure edges off to the east, a gradual return of clouds and eventually rain chances will re-enter the fcst next Thurs or Fri as another coastal trof tries to develop. 47

MARINE. Will adjust marine flags a bit based on latest obs/trends. First, gales will be cancelled early and be replaced by Small Craft Advisories overnight in the bays and into the Gulf water Fri. These should eventually be allowed to expire as winds and seas begin tapering down.

Also extended the low water advisory til 9pm until everyone gets out of their low tide cycle. Water levels should then begin slow recovery as winds diminish.

Unsettled wx rapidly develops Monday with the development of a coastal low around the Matagorda Bay area. Showers and thunderstorms will develop and winds/seas increase. Small craft advisories again look possible-likely. The coastal low will track to the east Monday night followed by a cold frontal passage Tuesday. 47
