Area Forecast Discussion . UPDATED National Weather Service Mobile AL 718 PM CST Sun Jan 16 2022

NEAR TERM UPDATE. The upper level low pressure system continues to lift northeastward into the western Carolinas early this evening, and is being followed by a drier northwest flow pattern aloft across our local area. Low clouds are still holding firmly in place as of 7 PM CST, but satellite trends indicate that the back edge of the low cloud shield should continue to erode eastward across our much of our forecast area later this evening into late tonight. There are some indications that low clouds could hang on over our interior southwest and south central AL zones into Monday morning. Will continue to evaluate satellite and some of the newer model guidance trends and may make some adjustments to the sky cover forecast accordingly. In terms of local hazards, we allowed the Wind Advisory to expire on schedule as of 6 PM CST over most of our inland areas, but held onto the advisory along the immediate coast until midnight as there as still some locations remaining gusty along the beaches early this evening. The High Surf Advisory remains in effect until midnight, as surf heights will still remain elevated between 4-7 feet (highest values along the western FL panhandle beaches) this evening before gradually subsiding. The HIGH rip current risk also continues through the overnight hours. Overnight lows still look on track to range from around 30 degrees to the mid 30s along and north of the I-10 corridor and in the upper 30s to lower 40s along the immediate coast and beaches. /21

MARINE UPDATE. The Gale Warning was allowed to expire on schedule at 6 PM CST. A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect through noon CST Monday for the entire marine area. We may consider dropping the advisory and replacing with SCEC headlines along a few of our protected waters with the routine mid-evening update based on the latest observational trends. Still expect winds to remain elevated between 20-25 knots with some gusts around or over 30 knots at times over the Gulf marine zones, including Lower Mobile Bay and the Mississippi Sound this evening, then generally lowering to around 20 knots by Monday morning. Seas of 5 to 10 feet nearshore this evening should subside to 3 to 6 feet Monday morning. Seas of 8 to 13 feet well offshore are expected to subside to 4 to 7 feet Monday morning. /21

AVIATION. 00Z issuance . Widespread MVFR ceilings over the forecast area early this evening should gradually erode over much of the area over the next several hours. Low ceilings could persist over portions of interior southwest/south central AL into early Monday morning. VFR should otherwise return into the day Monday. Northwest winds 5-15 knots with occasional higher gusts can be expected tonight, especially near the coast. /21

MOB WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. AL . High Rip Current Risk until 6 AM CST Monday for ALZ265-266.

High Surf Advisory until midnight CST tonight for ALZ265-266.
