Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Jacksonville FL 113 AM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

AVIATION. [Through 06Z Tuesday]

VFR conditions will prevail at the regional terminals. A brief period of MVFR visibilities is possible around sunrise at VQQ and GNV, but confidence was too low to include in the overnight TAFs. Light onshore surface winds of 5 knots or less will continue overnight at the coastal terminals, followed by surface winds becoming easterly and increasing to around 10 knots at SSI and SGJ by 16Z. East or east-northeasterly surface winds will develop by 15Z at the inland terminals, with speeds around 5 knots expected through the afternoon hours. Surface winds will shift to southeasterly at 5-10 knots at the coastal terminals towards 00Z, with winds inland subsiding towards midnight.

PREV DISCUSSION [824 PM EDT].

NEAR TERM [Through Tonight].

Stable conditions, dry weather, and clearing skies will continue through the rest of today and tonight as the persistent dry air mass associated with high pressure continues to affect the southeastern US. Winds will become more mild this evening and tonight. Overnight low temperatures are expected to drop into the lower 60s and upper 50s for inland areas and in the mid to upper 60s along the shoreline and for areas adjacent to the St Johns River.

SHORT TERM [Monday Through Wednesday].

Dry weather will continue on into the coming week as high pressure shifts eastward resulting in the prevailing flow over the forecast area shifting about to become more out of the east by midweek leading to slight increase in overall humidity levels. Temperatures will experience a mild warming trend this week with temps rising above the seasonal average with daily highs in the mid to upper 80s and lower 90s with min temps in the mid 60s for inland areas.

LONG TERM [Thursday Through Sunday].

Potential for showers with possible isolated thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday as a weak frontal passage works its way through the region from out of the north-northeast and then being followed by a cool dry air mass that will settle into the forecast area by the end of the weekend. The warming trend will come to an end by the end of the week with temperatures dipping down below the seasonal average.

MARINE.

High pressure building over the Tennessee Valley will continue to slide southeastward as it gradually weakens early this week, moving off the southeastern seaboard by Monday evening. The axis of this weakening high pressure center will remain in place across our local waters through Thursday night. Strengthening high pressure over southeastern Canada late this week will drive a weak cold front southward across our local waters by late Thursday night and Friday. Meanwhile, long period swells from Distant Major Hurricane Sam will enter our local waters beginning on Thursday.

Rip Currents: Moderate Risk

HYDROLOGY.

Minor flooding will continue along most of the Santa Fe and lower portions of the Satilla River during the next several days. Minor flooding along portions of the St. Marys River near the Macclenny gauge should fall back to action stage early in the week. The lower Suwannee River along the Gilchrist County border may approach minor flood levels towards midweek, which will result in slowly rising levels along lower portions of the Santa Fe River later during the upcoming week.
