Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Jacksonville FL 658 PM EST Tue Dec 7 2021

AVIATION. [Through 00Z Thursday]

A warm front will lift northward across southeast Georgia overnight. A wave of low pressure will move along the front, and then push the frontal boundary through the area Wednesday and Wednesday night. Showers will remain mainly across interior southeast Georgia overnight, with showers and embedded storms developing on Wednesday along the frontal boundary. Fog and low stratus will develop along the Gulf coast this evening and then push inland towards the TAF sites overnight and towards daybreak on Wednesday. IFR/LIFR conditions are expected. Southwest winds will increase to around 10 knots with higher gusts in the afternoon. Showers will increase in coverage from northwest to southeast through the day, and have VCSH at the TAF sites for now.

PREV DISCUSSION [341 PM EST].

NEAR TERM [Through Wednesday].

A stalled frontal boundary over NE FL will lift northward as a weak warm front through SE GA tonight. With moist southwesterly flow, low stratus and fog will advect inland from the Gulf across NE FL after midnight. Areas of dense fog will be possible again for areas mainly south of the I-10 corridor during the morning hours. A passing shortwave trough will push the frontal boundary southeastward as a cold front on Wednesday. Pre-frontal showers begin moving into SE GA early Wednesday morning. Numerous to scattered showers and a few thunderstorms move through SE GA and into NE FL on Wednesday as the cold front treks southeastward across the area. Shower activity will mostly come to an end by Wednesday evening. Lows tonight will be on the warm side in the upper 50s to low 60s. Highs on Wednesday will range from the low 70s in inland SE GA to around 80 in north-central FL.

SHORT TERM [Wednesday Night Through Friday].

The weakening cold front will continue pushing southeastward through the area Wednesday night and then stall over north-central FL on Thursday. The boundary then lifts back north as a warm front Thursday afternoon into Friday as ridging strengthens back over the southern Gulf region. A few showers will be possible along the Altamaha river basin as the frontal boundary lifts northward on Friday. Warm south-southwesterly flow develops behind the front and advects warm, moist air to the region. Temperatures will increase to above normal with highs on Thursday in the upper 60s to mid 70s becoming upper 70s/low 80s on Friday. Lows will increase from the upper 40s to upper 50s Wednesday night to the 50s to low 60s Thursday night.

LONG TERM [Friday Night Through Monday].

Ridging extending into the southern Gulf begins to weaken over the area Friday night into Saturday. Dry conditions anticipated for Saturday. Warm south-southwesterly flow Saturday will maintain above normal temperatures with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s and lows in the 50s and 60s. A strong trough digs into the southeastern US pushing another cold front into the area Saturday night into Sunday bringing scattered showers and few thunderstorms. High pressure builds in behind the front and filters in cooler, drier air to the region. Temperatures drop to below normal Sunday into Monday with highs in the 60s to low 70s and lows in the upper 30s to low 50s.

MARINE.

A weak frontal boundary over northeast Florida will lift northward tonight. Nearshore fog is possible again along the northeast Florida coast early Wednesday morning. A cold front will move southeast across the area Wednesday into Wednesday evening. High pressure will build to the north Wednesday night, then to the east-northeast Thursday into Saturday. A cold front will cross the area Saturday night into Sunday. Elevated winds and seas will be possible with the frontal passage.
