Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tucson AZ 250 AM MST Wed Sep 22 2021

SYNOPSIS. Breezy and mostly dry conditions today. Chances for showers and storms will increase Thursday and continue through this weekend as a weather system approaches and moves across the region.

DISCUSSION. The sky was clear across SE AZ early this morning while south of the border a decaying MCS was moving west across the central Gulf of California into Baja. Outflow from this system will increase low level moisture near the Intl border between Nogales and Lukeville this morning. PW values currently over 1" south of the border will creep across the border today. Went ahead and increased PoPs for the border areas of Pima county for a slight chance of showers/storms later this afternoon into early this evening. The other weather issue today will be the gusty east winds of 25 to 30 mph for areas that are prone to gusty east winds. Highs today will be at or slightly above normal.

Over the next 24 hours a upper level trof will move across the PacNW with the tail end breaking away over southern Idaho on Thursday. This system, as a closed low, will drop south/southwest to near Yuma on Friday, then meander over northern Baja on Saturday before lifting across southern Arizona/northern Sonora MX on Sunday and Monday. Thus a slight chance of showers/storms Thu/Fri then better chances of showers/storms this weekend as the core of the low moves across the area. Some areas will be brief heavy downpours. This will be the last chances to add to the 2021 Monsoon rainfall totals.

High temperatures Friday into early next week will be several degrees below normal.

AVIATION. Valid through 23/12Z. Generally SKC-FEW clouds at 11k-14k ft MSL thru 22/22Z, with SCT clouds at 10k-12k ft MSL aft 22/22Z. Slight chance of -SHRA/-TSRA west of a KOLS-KTUS line aft 23/00Z. SFC wind ELY/SELY at 10-15 kts and gusts to around 25 kts thru the forecast period. Aviation not updated for TAF amendments.

FIRE WEATHER. High temperatures will be within a couple of degrees of normal through Thursday, falling to around 5 degrees below normal late in the weekend and early next week. Elevated easterly winds will occur through Thursday morning, with wind speeds of 10-15 mph gusting to 20-25 mph and localized gusts to around 30 mph in areas prone to enhanced east winds. Dry conditions will continue across the area through today, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms starting tonight and continuing through the weekend into early next week. RH values will remain above critical thresholds.

TWC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
