Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tucson AZ 250 AM MST Thu Sep 23 2021

SYNOPSIS. Chances for showers and storms will start today and continue into early next week an a pair of systems impact the area. High temperatures will mostly be several degrees below late September normals.

DISCUSSION. We have an interesting next 5 days as we wrap up one of the wettest monsoons on record for southeast Arizona.

Satellite imagery this morning showed partly cloudy to mostly cloudy conditions associated with upper low that was located over central Gulf of California. Radar at 230 am was showing some very light showers approaching the Intl border. Further upstream there was an upper level trof that extended from southern Alberta to southern Idaho. Latest water vapor imagery was showing the southern part of the trof was in the process of splitting away from the trof. More on this later. Back to our nearby system.

The system to our southwest will be lifting northeast across the area today, bringing a chance of showers and thunderstorms to mainly the southern parts of the forecast area with focus on Cochise county. With PW values up to 1.25" near the Intl border of Cochise county, brief downpours are possible.

The system splitting over Idaho will be the driver of our weather Friday into early next week as it dives south/southwest and becomes a closed low near Yuma on Friday, retrograding off northern Baja coast by Saturday and then moving east and lifting across the Sunday into Monday. This system will bring a daily chance of showers and thunderstorms, some with brief heavy rain, to the area Friday into Monday.

This system east of the area Monday night into Tuesday with another possible closed low impacting the area on the last day of the month. Confidence low on this scenario.

High temperatures near normal today then below normal for the remainder of the 7 day forecast.

AVIATION. Valid through 24/12Z. BKN-OVC clouds AOA 20k ft MSL thru 23/18Z, then SCT-BKN clouds at 10k-14k ft MSL thru the remainder of the forecast period. ISOLD-SCT -SHRA/-TSRA developing aft 23/18Z. SFC wind variable in direction at less than 12 kts. Aviation not updated for TAF amendments.

FIRE WEATHER. High temperatures will be near normal today, falling to around 5 degrees below normal late this weekend and early next week. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop this afternoon, with the chance of precipitation persisting through the weekend into early next week. RH values will remain above critical thresholds and 20-foot winds will generally be less than 15 mph.

TWC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
