SYNOPSIS
High pressure will prevail through much of next week. A weak cold front could approach late next week.
NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/
Sprinkle/very light shower activity is waning as we approach sunset as cooling inhibits mixing into the moist layer around 860 mb, with dry conditions prevailing overnight. A modest pinching of the gradient as the surface high pushes in from the north has briefly returned gusty conditions mainly along the SC coast, but winds will diminish again after sunset.
Overnight, little change is expected in the overall pattern with a mid- upper level ridge axis extending across the Southeast United States and sfc high pressure centered to the north extending south across the local area. Mid- high clouds should limit stronger radiational cooling, but winds are still expected to become light, especially away from the coast by late evening. Like the previous night, guidance hints at some scattered to broken stratocumulus developing within a few hours of daybreak, especially across parts of southeast Georgia.
Latest guidance suggests temps to dip into the upper 50s inland, but remain in the mid- upper 60s at the beaches where a light onshore flow prevails.
SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY/
A quiet weather pattern is expected through the short term period, owing to broad ridging will prevailing aloft and high pressure dominating at the surface. As the week progresses the ridging aloft will slowly shift off the southeastern coastline. A shortwave trough is expected to ripple across the southeastern states Tuesday into Wednesday, possibly spurring some showers/tstorms across far inland locations.
Between the ridging aloft and the high pressure dominating at the surface temperatures through the middle of the week will be above normal, reaching into the low to mid 80s each day. Overnight lows are forecast to dip into the 50s Sunday night with 60s Monday night.
LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/
Weak ridging will build back in aloft, while high pressure continues to prevail at the surface. Another shortwave trough is forecast to swing across the southeastern states Friday, bringing the region the next chance of precipitation. Otherwise, quiet conditions with above normal temperatures are expected.
AVIATION /00Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/
VFR conditions are expected to prevail at KCHS, KJZI, and KSAV through 00Z Monday. A brief return of gusty onshore winds this evening in the Charleston Area will subside again after sunset, with mainly light to moderate SE winds prevailing through the end of the TAF period.
Persistent BL moisture will bring the potential for increasing low level clouds with peak cooling late tonight, and some patchy MVFR to IFR stratus/stratocu could develop before sunrise.
Guidance indicates greatest moisture pooling south of the Charleston area, so just TEMPO MVFR cigs at SAV for the time being, with CHS and JZI more likely to be sct below 3kft.
Improved mixing increases cloud bases after sunrise.
Extended Aviation Outlook: Prevailing VFR.
MARINE
The high building in from the north has brought a brief surge of onshore winds along the South Carolina coast, with an MWS for occasional gusts to near 25 kt issued through 9 PM.
Tonight: Sfc high pressure centered north of the region will continue to sag south across the local area, slackening the pressure gradient across coastal waters through the night. Expect east-southeast winds no higher than 10-15 kt, but seas gradually building through the night. A Small Craft Advisory will remain in effect across offshore Georgia waters through the night, mainly for seas up to 6-7 ft. Seas will remain below advisory levels across nearshore waters, generally in the 3-5 ft range.
Sunday through Wednesday: With high pressure prevailing aloft, generally quiet marine conditions are expected through the middle of the week. Seas will subside across the 20 to 60 nm offshore GA waters Sunday afternoon/evening and the Small Craft Advisory will expire. Thereafter seas will average 2 to 4 ft across the marine zones. Winds will be out of the SE to SW, generally around 10 knots.
Each afternoon a sea breeze is expected to form each afternoon which could produce some gusty winds along the coastline and in the Charleston Harbor. Some gusts could approach 20 knots.
Rip Currents: Moderate onshore winds will continue through the weekend, while approximately 2 or 3 ft waves every 7-8 seconds reach the beaches. The local rip current calculator indicates a Moderate Risk of rip currents along all beaches through tomorrow (Sunday).
