Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 156 PM PDT Thu Sep 23 2021

SYNOPSIS. An area of low pressure will lead to cooler weather and a chance for showers and thunderstorms across the region through the weekend. As the system approaches from the north, we will see areas of smoke for the rest of today into Friday. As this area of low pressure moves eastward, another area of low pressure will approach the west coast. This will lead to continued cooler weather with night and morning low clouds for the coast and western valleys.

DISCUSSION. FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE . SAN DIEGO . WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES .

SHORT TERM. (Today through Saturday) . A trough of low pressure is currently drifting south across the Southwest today with the back edge of this system bringing upper- level winds from the north. These northerly winds have brought smoke from Central California wildfires down into SoCal. Areas of thick smoke aloft will be seen for the rest of today and into tomorrow, with the most being confined to our northern locations. Moist west and southwest flow around this trough is also triggering some storms to pop up along and east of the mountains into the deserts this afternoon.

A cutoff low is expected to form tomorrow, though exact placement of this feature will be a key factor as to where and how much rain we see from thunderstorms Friday into Saturday. Ensemble models are in a bit better agreement today as to hint at a chance for measurable precip for the mountains and deserts Friday into Saturday. Depending on the placement of the low, rap around moisture may be sufficient enough to bring some of these storms from the mountains all the way to the coastal areas. Therefore, we have introduced a slight chance for thunderstorms for all western valleys and coastal areas Friday and Saturday, as this agrees with latest WRF/HRRR guidance as well.

LONG TERM. (Sunday Onward) . There is still some uncertainty on when exactly this cutoff low pressure system will depart the region, but timing should be within the late Sunday into Monday timeframe. Sunday storm chances as of now are looking quite minimal as ensembles have very few members showing precipitation for mountains/deserts. As one system departs, another comes in! A large trough to the north will invade the Pacific Northwest early in the week. This will bring continued cooling with night and morning low clouds for areas west of the mountains. NBM showing many 60s and 70s for coastal areas by Tuesday and Wednesday with low temperatures sinking into the 50s (and even some 40s into the Mojave!). Ensemble guidance diverges after the middle of the week, where some depict more troughing and others more of a ridging pattern.

AVIATION. 231955Z . SCT-BKN100-200 through this evening. ISOLD -SHRA/-TSRA with bases FL100, mainly near the mountains. Coastal areas AFT 24/07Z Thursday evening . SCT-BKN007 with LCL VIS 3-5SM BR. Risk of BKN low clouds based 600-900 feet MSL late tonight into Friday morning is moderate. Confidence in KSAN TAF timing/duration of BKN low clouds is only moderate as the duration of the BKN low clouds may be rather short.

MARINE. No hazardous marine weather through Sunday . except a slight chance of -shra/-tsra Friday and Saturday. Wind gusts to 20 kts over the Outer Waters late this afternoon.

SKYWARN. Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
