Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Charleston SC 124 AM EDT Sun Apr 28 2024

SYNOPSIS
High pressure will prevail through much of next week. A weak cold front could approach late next week.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/
Dry conditions prevail as the surface high ridges in more strongly from the north. Mainly cirrus sky cover, with more low clouds - based around 3-4 kft - likely to develop through the overnight hours, abating radiational cooling and suppressing the potential for radiational fog. Latest trends suggest temps to dip into the upper 50s far inland, but remain in the mid-upper 60s at the beaches where a light onshore flow prevails.

SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY/
A quiet weather pattern is expected through the short term period, owing to broad ridging will prevailing aloft and high pressure dominating at the surface. As the week progresses the ridging aloft will slowly shift off the southeastern coastline. A shortwave trough is expected to ripple across the southeastern states Tuesday into Wednesday, possibly spurring some showers/tstorms across far inland locations.

Between the ridging aloft and the high pressure dominating at the surface temperatures through the middle of the week will be above normal, reaching into the low to mid 80s each day. Overnight lows are forecast to dip into the 50s Sunday night with 60s Monday night.

LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/
Weak ridging will build back in aloft, while high pressure continues to prevail at the surface. Another shortwave trough is forecast to swing across the southeastern states Friday, bringing the region the next chance of precipitation. Otherwise, quiet conditions with above normal temperatures are expected.

AVIATION /05Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/
VFR conditions are expected to prevail at KCHS, KJZI, and KSAV through 06Z Monday.

Persistent boundary layer moisture will bring the potential for increasing low level clouds Sunday morning, as patchy MVFR to IFR stratus/stratocumulus could develop, especially at KSAV.

All sites will also experience broken 3500-4000 ft ceilings for a few hours before the sea breeze passes inland Sunday afternoon, followed by some gusts of 15 or 20 kt in its wake.

Extended Aviation Outlook: Prevailing VFR.

MARINE
Overnight: Sfc high pressure centered north of the region will continue to sag south across the local area, slackening the pressure gradient across coastal waters. Expect east-southeast winds no higher than 10-15 kt, but with the favorable onshore fetch, seas could build another foot or so. A Small Craft Advisory will remain in effect across offshore Georgia waters through the night, mainly for seas up to 6-7 ft. Seas will remain below advisory levels across nearshore waters, generally in the 3-5 ft range.

Sunday through Wednesday: With high pressure prevailing aloft, generally quiet marine conditions are expected through the middle of the week. Seas will subside across the 20 to 60 nm offshore GA waters Sunday afternoon/evening and the Small Craft Advisory will expire. Thereafter seas will average 2 to 4 ft across the marine zones. Winds will be out of the SE to SW, generally around 10 knots.
Each afternoon a sea breeze is expected to form each afternoon which could produce some gusty winds along the coastline and in the Charleston Harbor. Some gusts could approach 20 knots.

Rip Currents: Moderate onshore winds will continue through the weekend, while approximately 2 or 3 ft waves every 7-8 seconds reach the beaches. The local rip current calculator indicates a Moderate Risk of rip currents along all beaches through tomorrow (Sunday).
