Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 929 AM PDT Sat Oct 23 2021

SYNOPSIS. A deep marine layer will bring clouds and pockets of light rain or drizzle west of the mountains this morning, followed by partial clearing this afternoon. Sunday will be a dry and mild day. A storm on Monday will bring rain over and west of the mountains, and a chance for rain in the deserts. High pressure building in behind the trough will bring dry, warmer weather Tuesday through Friday.

DISCUSSION. FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE . SAN DIEGO . WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES .

MORNING UPDATE.

Widespread drizzle is occurring this morning west of the mountains, where a few tenths of an inch of precipitation has been recorded. Patchy fog has reduced visibility in a few spots this morning. Visibility of 1 mile is being reported at Fullerton Airport, Cable Airport, and Oceanside Airport. Improvement in visibility is expected in the next couple of hours. Drizzle will continue west of the mountains this morning, with some partial clearing of low clouds this afternoon.

The low pressure system passing to the north today will bring cooler temperatures and stronger onshore flow. High temperatures this afternoon will be 10 to 15 degrees below average in the mountains and valleys, and 5 to 10 degrees below average in the deserts and at the coast. Temperatures will warm slightly on Sunday, but will continue to be well below average.

The storm system is still on track to impact SoCal on Monday. See the previous discussion for more details on this upcoming beneficial rain event. No forecast changes were needed this morning.

PREVIOUS DISCUSSION (issued at 325 AM Saturday).

Clearing west of the mountains will be slow today, but most areas should see some breaks in the clouds later this afternoon behind the trough. High clouds will drift across the mountains and deserts today. Sunday will be a mild day with morning clouds west of the mountains clearing in the afternoon.

Confidence in the Monday storm grows. Models the past few days have shown great run-to-run consistency, and this morning is no different. The WRF model shows the southern edge of the atmospheric river reaching SoCal Monday morning, with rain spreading from northwest to southeast through the day before ending in the evening. Highest rain totals will be over the San Bernardino Mountains and Foothills where orographics in the moisture laden southwest flow will produce 1.00"-1.50" of rain, with perhaps a few areas getting close to 1.75". Precipiation amounts tail off farther south where 0.10"-0.25" is forecast in southern San Diego County and also in the rain shadowed areas of the Inland Empire. Snow levels above 9,000 feet will limit snow accumulation to Mount San Gorgonio and Mount San Jacinto. Most of the rain will get wrung out over the mountains and very little, if any, rain will fall in the lower deserts. The highs deserts will see 0.05"-0.20" of precipitation.

Breezy west winds ahead of the cold front will gust to 40-50 mph in the mountains, passes and down the eastern mountains slopes Monday.

On Tuesday the trough moves east and high pressure builds over the Southwest for generally clear skies and warmer days through Friday. Highs will return to seasonal norms Wednesday, with greater warming Thursday and Friday with weak offshore flow.

AVIATION. 231535Z . Coasts/Valleys . Low clouds based 1000-2000 ft MSL with tops around 4500 ft MSL, but locally BKN 500-900 ft MSL with areas of 1-3 SM in light rain/fog through 19Z. Low clouds lifting to mainly 3000-4000 ft MSL and locally SCT by around 24/00Z Saturday afternoon, with slowest clearing near the foothills. Risk of BKN low clouds at KSAN through 24/00Z this afternoon at KSAN is moderate, so moderate confidence in timing of low cloud coverage in the KSAN TAF.

After 24/02z Saturday evening lower clouds based near 2000 ft MSL redeveloping with tops near 4000 ft MSL.

Mountains/Deserts . Coastal slopes below 4500 ft MSL obscured by clouds and light rain/fog, otherwise SCT-BKN high clouds AOA 20,000 ft MSL and unrestricted vis will continue through the weekend.

MARINE. Northwest winds with gusts around 20 knots expected in the outer waters this afternoon and evening. A storm system will bring another round of west-northwest winds with gusts around 20 knots for all areas and combined seas of 6-9 ft Monday afternoon into Tuesday, highest in the outer waters.

BEACHES. A series of west-northwest swells will bring elevated to high surf and a high rip current risk to Southern California beaches through Wednesday. Surf will increase to 3-5 feet today with sets to 7 feet possible in southern San Diego County. A larger and longer period west-northwest swell, and a long period south-southwest swell will arrive Monday, bringing even higher surf to the beaches through Wednesday. Highest surf will be in southern San Diego County.

SKYWARN. Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.

SGX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. CA . Beach Hazards Statement through this evening for Orange County Coastal Areas-San Diego County Coastal Areas.
