Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wilmington NC 713 PM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

SYNOPSIS. A warmup is expected as high pressure shifts off the coast. A cold front on Thursday will bring a return of more seasonable weather late in the week. Rain chances are minimal following the passage of the front.

UPDATE. No significant changes were needed with this evening's forecast update. Unlike the last few nights there will be a little wind, 15-20 knots, about 1000 feet above the surface. This should help keep the boundary layer a little better mixed than last night. Lows 60-65 still look reasonable under clear skies.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/. Nice and quiet weather continues for our area as high pressure overhead shifts offshore tonight and dry air column persists. Lows tonight near 60 away from the coast. With high pressure offshore and mostly clear skies, temps Tuesday will increase to mid to upper 80s. A prefrontal trough moves across the area Tuesday night, but with moisture well to the northeast and low PWATs locally the most we'll see is a wind shift and a few clouds overhead. Lows Tuesday night in the low 60s.

SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/. Impressive upper low over New England States drives a cold front through the area on Wednesday. And though the windshift will be quite well-defined the cold advection appears to lag, bringing another afternoon with highs in the mid 80s. Similarly the CAA appears held up Wednesday night in part by a weak low forming on the boundary just to our south. Lows expected to remain in the mid/upper 60s.

LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/. High pressure builds in from the north on Thursday especially late, possibly enough so for a slight diurnal aberration from normal temperature curve. Upper trough axis swings through on Friday. This should allow the large high to build in more aggressively and thus the cooler temperature guidance looks more reasonable. No big cooldown though-just getting back to near climatology. Towards the weekend there may be a radiational cooling night or two.

AVIATION /00Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. VFR should prevail over the next 24 hours. No significant risk exists for fog overnight and any convective clouds Tuesday should have bases near 5000 feet AGL.

Extended Outlook . VFR. A low potential exists Thursday and Thursday night for MVFR cloud ceilings along the coast.

MARINE. Through Tuesday Night . Benign marine conditions through Tuesday night, with high pressure offshore tonight and Tuesday and a trough moving across Tuesday night. West-southwest winds around 10kts through Tuesday will increase late Tuesday afternoon and evening to around 15 kts. Seas around 2 ft Tuesday will increase briefly to 2-3 ft Tuesday night, a mix of 1-2 ft 9 sec E swell and SW wind chop.

Wednesday through Saturday . Cold front pushing through Wednesday but with a weak inland wave of low pressure that will delay the turn to N or NE. Winds instead will become very light and variable. Front- running swells from Sam arriving as well but not with much power or height just yet. Onshore flow sets up on Thursday but with speeds remaining minimal. Upper trough axis swings through on Friday allowing for a few more knots of wind speed as the high to our north builds. NE winds remain on Saturday as Sam swells continue. We do not appear to reach advisory levels from the swell, perhaps due to the diminutive nature of the hurricane.

ILM WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. SC . None. NC . None. MARINE . None.
