Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Columbia SC 728 PM EDT Sun Sep 26 2021

SYNOPSIS. Dry weather will continue the middle of the week with high temperatures increasing a couple degrees each day. Slightly cooler temperatures will return for late this week into the weekend.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM MONDAY MORNING/. Pressure ridge remains over the area. Air mass has modified some over the past couple of days. Sky clear. The temperature guidance is consistent. Overnight low temps a few degrees warmer expected so mainly mid to upper 50s.

SHORT TERM /6 AM MONDAY MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/. Little change in the overall synoptic pattern through Tuesday night with a upper level trough over the western Atlantic and a gradually building ridge over the central US. Pwat values will be slowly rising each day with values around 0.9 inches Monday and just over 1 inch Tuesday. Temperatures will also be rising a couple degrees each day which will yield a bit more cumulus development . however the development will be limited by a strong subsidence inversion around 850 mb each day. This will result in mostly clear skies through Tuesday night allowing for excellent radiational cooling conditions. High temperatures will be in the mid 80s Monday with upper 80s Tuesday and overnight lows in the upper 50s to low 60s each night.

LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/. The upper level pattern will become more amplified Wednesday with an upper level low over New England. With the amplification progression will slow through Friday with models diverging through the weekend as the GFS becomes more progressive while the ECMWF does not. At the surface weak high pressure will remain over the region Wednesday and Thursday with a weak frontal boundary approaching from the north. Over the past couple of model runs this front has been kept further north and stalling over NC with consensus it will remain moisture limited. By Friday weak low pressure will be developing over the central MS River Valley however with the differences in the progression of the upper level pattern there are reflections at the surface with the GFS pushing the weak low into the eastern US while the ECMWF keeps the region under dry high pressure. Attm have made only minor adjustments for Friday onward due to low confidence and will continue to monitor.

AVIATION /00Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/. VSBY Restrictions at Fog Prone AGS but otherwise VFR.

Skies clearing at all terminals with winds becoming light through tonight. Expect VFR conditions to persist at all terminals except AGS. Shallow river fog will move over AGS late tonight. Similar conditions to last night with IFR VSBYs expected with TEMPO conditions of VSBYs dropping below 1SM. Winds will be generally out of the SW tomorrow around 5kts with a limited cumulus field around 5kft.

EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK . Besides brief restrictions in the early morning hours due to patchy fog, no impacts to aviation are expected.

CAE WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. GA . None. SC . None.
