Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Birmingham AL 309 AM CDT Sat Oct 16 2021

SHORT TERM. /Updated at 0247 AM CDT Sat Oct 16 2021/

Through Sunday.

The cold front is here. As of 3 AM the front is near a line from Selma to Anniston and quickly sliding east. Rainfall has been light so far and beginning to become more scattered as the night progresses. Look for the overall trend to continue through the morning. In fact most shower activity may be done by sunrise. Still think there will be some backside moisture, so added drizzle in behind the front. Look for the low-level moisture and clouds to clear out by midday. Winds will gusty at times as well through the day, but should remain below wind advisory criteria. Cooler air will continue to filter into the area and highs will only be in the upper 60s to mid 70s by the afternoon. For tonight, the winds should diminish after midnight and we will see a significant radiational cooling type of night. Look for lows to be in the 40s. Despite the dry airmass that will be in place, most rivers and larger bodies of water will be well above the surrounding air dewpoints, so added in patchy fog for the river and bodies of water. After any fog burns off, Sunday will be nice and dry with clear skies and temperatures in the 60s and 70s for highs.

LONG TERM. /Updated at 0247 AM CDT Sat Oct 16 2021/

Monday through Friday.

High pressure slowly builds across the Southeastern CONUS Monday through Wednesday of next week. This will lead to clear skies and generally cooler weather for Central AL. Morning low temperatures on Monday will be in the low to mid 40s for much of the area with a gradual warming trend in the diurnal temperature curves as we go through the week.

For the latter portions of the week, the surface high is expected to slide to our east, increasing southerly flow and leading to warmer temperatures. We'll also see a flattening of the upper ridge as a few shortwaves slide through towards the end of the week, leading to increasing cloud cover. Model guidance continues to suggest another frontal passage late in the week, but there's still a good bit of variance in terms of timing, so I'll continue with the upward trend in PoPs Thursday into Friday, but won't go much above 30% chance for rain at this time.

AVIATION. 06Z TAF Discussion.

There will be a few hour window of MVFR skies with the frontal passage and behind it. Also added in some drizzle on the backside of the front. No additional impacts here. Clearing skies after 15z to 18z. Winds will be gusty during the day from the north, before dissipating after 3z.

Note: AMD NOT SKED is appended at KBHM due to ASOS power loss until further notice.

FIRE WEATHER.

A cold front is moving quickly through the region this morning. northwesterly flow will build in for much of the day with cooler and drier air. Thus, minimum RH values will trend toward the 30-50% today through mid-week.
