Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 201 PM PDT Thu Oct 28 2021

SYNOPSIS. Breezy Santa Ana winds will continue through this afternoon across the coastal mountain slopes. Very warm conditions are expected for today. Winds will turn onshore for Friday, allowing cooling to spread inland through this weekend and early next week. As the marine layer deepens, night and morning low clouds and fog will spread farther inland, reaching coastal foothills of the mountains Monday night.

DISCUSSION. FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE . SAN DIEGO . WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES .

At 2 PM, skies were clear across Southern California. Breezy offshore winds will continue for several hours this afternoon, with wind gusts of 25-35 mph, locally higher in favored locations. Abundant sunshine, offshore winds and very dry conditions will allow for temperatures to warm efficiently west of the mountains today. Highs are expected to range 10 to 15 degrees above normal for areas west of the mountains.

The ridge centered over the western United States will break down tonight, with longwave troughing filling its place on Friday. Flow will turn onshore, with cooling spreading inland through the inland valleys. A coastal eddy is expected to develop late on Friday with low clouds and fog enveloping the coast. The marine layer to deepen each night over the next several days, with low clouds and fog extending into the valleys by Sunday morning. In addition to the extensive low cloud cover this weekend, high clouds will be present at times Saturday through Monday.

Temperatures will begin a downward trend starting on Friday, with the coolest temperatures likely occurring on Monday. Highs will range 5 to 15 degrees below normal for areas from the mountains, westward, and 2 to 7 degrees below normal for the deserts. Weak ridging will build across the western U.S. on Tuesday, allowing for temperatures to slowly rise and the marine layer to become more shallow through the middle of next week.

AVIATION. 282020Z . Clear skies with unrestricted visibility through tonight. Areas of northeast winds 20-35 knots in foothills and some adjacent valleys through 00Z Friday, with pockets of LLWS possible vcnty KONT, KSBD and KRAL.

MARINE. No hazardous marine conditions are expected through Monday. However, patchy fog with visibility below 1 NM is possible for a brief time Friday and Saturday mornings.

SKYWARN. Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
