Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 812 PM PST Sat Jan 15 2022

SYNOPSIS. Lingering, brief showers should end later tonight, but could redevelop again Monday night into Tuesday as a weakening Pacific storm moves inland. In the interim, partly cloudy and mild conditions are expected on Sunday. It will be slightly cooler Monday and Tuesday as the marine layer deepens, followed by dry weather and gradual warming through next weekend under a strong West Coast ridge.

DISCUSSION. FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE . SAN DIEGO . WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES .

* The Tsunami Advisory is now cancelled for all of the Southern California Coast. * Updated rainfall through 8 PM headlined on our webpage

Radar has indicated spotty, light showers all evening in a band extending from southern San Diego County northwestward across Orange County and points farther north. Rainfall reports have been very light and should do no more than dampen road surfaces in some areas. Supporting these showers, was a moistening atmosphere. Our 00Z Miramar sounding indicates our surface dry layer has eroded some 4K FT from this morning, and our PWAT surged by about one-half inch to 1.22 inches. Moderate offshore sfc pressure gradients continue from the high deserts across SoCal, but easterly winds have weakened. At 8 PM PST . Stronger winds in wind-prone areas were 20-25 MPH with peak gusts below 40 MPH. Forecast updates were issued earlier.

A cut-off low centered about 550 miles WSW of San Diego will remain parked off the coast through Sunday, before drifting eastward Monday. The low will weaken as it drifts closer to the coast, but carry a lot of moisture with it. In addition, our surface dry layer, supported by Santa Ana winds, will collapse, allowing marine air to spread well inland on Monday. Even though forcing will be weak, without the deep dry layer near the surface, any showers that do accompany the incoming trough, will have a better chance of supplying measurable rainfall. Models show little accumulation, but most of the ECMWF ensemble solutions are wet, while the GFS solutions are mostly dry. Given the moist pattern and at least some lift, plan on some scattered showers with measurable rain by Monday night or Tuesday morning. Sunday should be dry, mild, with fewer clouds.

The remnants of the upper low will drift east Tue evening with a weak trough in northerly flow aloft, maintaining the onshore flow and a deep marine layer through Wednesday morning. It will be cooler through Wednesday, due to the onshore flow and marine influence, but quickly turn warmer and dry again for the latter half of the week as Santa Ana conditions develop. Now, with the cut-off low out of the picture, the West coast ridge will dominate our weather through next weekend and into the following week.

AVIATION. 160400Z . BKN clouds around 5,500-7,000 ft MSL continue overnight for coastal TAF sites while inland areas can expect ceilings at 10,000 ft MSL or higher. Cloud cover will decrease overnight. Isolated sprinkles or light showers continue for the mountains westward through the next few hours before diminishing. Vis remaining mostly unrestricted through tonight.

NE to E winds with some sfc gusts 25-35 kt continuing below the passes/canyons and along the coastal mountain slopes and foothills this afternoon, slowly weakening this evening. MOD up/downdrafts and areas of LLWS possible over and SW/W of the mountains before winds slowly diminish this evening.

MARINE. No hazardous marine weather conditions are expected through Wednesday.

BEACHES. A west swell of 4 ft at 14-15 seconds will continue to produce elevated surf. Highest surf will be in southern San Diego County where surf of 3-5 ft is expected but surf heights are trending lower and will likely continue to do so through the weekend. Moderate to strong rip currents are expected at all beaches.

SKYWARN. Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.

SGX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. CA . NONE. PZ . NONE.

PUBLIC . 10 AVIATION/MARINE/BEACHES . BA
