Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 821 PM PST Tue Jan 18 2022

SYNOPSIS. Onshore winds will prevail through Wednesday with temperatures remaining a little below normal west of the mountains. Warmer weather will spread across the region Thursday as a weak to locally moderate Santa Ana wind develops, then a stronger Santa Ana wind will occur Saturday. Clear, dry weather with warm days will continue through early next week.

DISCUSSION. FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE . SAN DIEGO . WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES .

Update:

Highs today were in the 60s west of the mountains and across the high desert, in the 70s across the lower desert, and in the 40s and 50s in the mountains. Cold air aloft made for a nice sky with cumulus cloud development along and west of the mountains, but with little rainfall.

Clouds will continue across most areas from the coast to the coastal mountain slopes tonight with a clear sky over the mountains and across the deserts. No changes to the forecast were needed this evening. See previous discussion below.

Previous Discussion (Issued at 200 PM PST Tue Jan 18 2022):

Skies were mostly cloudy in most areas, except sunnier in the deserts and some San Diego County coastal areas. It was rather chilly with temperatures in the upper 50s to mid 60s west of the mountains though with some lower to mid 70s in the lower deserts. Most of the showers have ended, but with a final short wave moving through late tonight and residual moisture to around 5000-6000 feet MSL, there should be isolated showers this evening, with any additional precipitation only a few hundredths of an inch. A bit of coastal stratus will occur overnight as well, and some of that could linger as late as early afternoon Wednesday given some remaining low level moisture.

A ridge of high pressure will prevail off the coast Wednesday through at least early next week, while troughing will prevail over much of the central and eastern US. Shortwaves will drop south over the western US on the back side of the trough, and this will assist with Santa Ana winds in SoCal. The first batch of northeasterly winds will be relatively minor Thursday as winds in the 700-850 mb layer will mostly be 20-25 knots without much of a push of cold air. Hence, local gusts of around 50 MPH will likely be the maximum of this event, though drier air should prevail over the region. Slight weakening of the wind is expected Friday before the next shortwave moves south which might change into a closed low and substantially tighten the height gradients aloft and bring down more cold air aloft. Winds in the 700-850 mb layer could be up to 40-50 knots, and current guidance suggests the possibility of local gusts around 65- 75 MPH. Initially the winds will be more northerly, mainly impacting areas near/below Cajon Pass and the Santa Ana Mountains, but by Sunday, the winds will be more easterly which will impact the San Diego County Mountains and Valleys and areas near Banning Pass. Winds will generally be a little lighter Sunday, except in San Diego County where they could actually be a bit stronger due to the mountain ridge orientation.

It will likely be warmer late this week, though the positioning of the shortwave/upper low around Saturday could have a big influence in temperatures as is noted by the ensembles/ENS MOS. Most likely highs will be in the 70s at most locations at lower elevations Thursday through early next week, but they could cool into the 60s if the upper low brings in enough cold air. Most likely, the mountains and high deserts will be the main places that will be cooler around Saturday. There is currently no indication of precipitation over our area with this upper low.

AVIATION. 190420 . Coast/Valleys/Mountains . BKN bases 1000-2000 FT MSL through tonight slowly filling in, locally as low as 600 ft MSL at times after 08Z Wed. Vis 4 to 6 sm in BR. Moderate to high confidence in slow clearing on Wednesday, mainly after 18-19Z. NE winds will ramp up along the coastal slopes into some of the northern valleys Wednesday night.

Deserts . Mostly clear with unrestricted vis through Wednesday.

MARINE. No hazardous marine weather conditions are expected through Sunday.

FIRE WEATHER. Gusty north to northeasterly Santa Ana winds will occur Thursday morning, then diminish some Thursday night and Friday. The strongest winds are expected near and below the Cajon Pass and near the coastal foothills of the Santa Ana mountains with local gusts around 50 mph. Lowest daytime humidity in inland areas will fall to around 20 percent Thursday.

A round of stronger and more widespread Santa Ana winds with lower inland humidity is expected this weekend, especially Saturday. Northeasterly Santa Ana winds are expected to develop on Friday night and strengthen Saturday morning with the winds becoming more easterly Saturday night and Sunday. Model support is greatest for a moderate to locally strong event Saturday. In most locations, strongest winds will occur Saturday, but parts of San Diego County could have the strongest winds Sunday due to the more easterly flow. Strongest local gusts Saturday could be in the 60 to 75 mph range. Lowest humidity in inland areas on Saturday will fall to 10 to 15 percent. Weaker and more localized winds will occur Sunday night into early Monday.

SKYWARN. Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
