Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 200 PM PST Tue Dec 7 2021

SYNOPSIS. The brief period of light rain today will be followed by dry weather tonight and Wednesday. A stronger low pressure trough will bring more rain Wednesday night and Thursday. Friday through Sunday will be dry and mild. A potentially wetter storm is forecast early next week.

DISCUSSION. FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE . SAN DIEGO . WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES .

The band of light rain that moved across the area today could only muster a few hundredths of an inch in most areas. The highest total so far through 1 PM was 0.11" at Mount San Jacinto. Rain totals west of the mountains and the high deserts ranged from 0.01-0.05".

The band was moving quickly south into northern Baja this afternoon. Satellite imagery showed clearing already moving into San Bernardino and Riverside Counties which will press southward through the evening.

Wednesday night and Thursday . ensemble models and high resolution guidance this morning all showed a stronger and wetter rain event. Here are the projected rain totals:

Coast and Valley: 0.10"-0.50" with lowest totals in Orange County and the rain shadowed areas of the Inland Empire east of the Santa Ana Mountains, and highest totals in the San Diego County valleys and foothills.

Mountains: 0.50-1.25" in the mountains where stronger west-southwest winds of 20-30 mph ahead of the trough will result if efficient orographics. The highest totals from 1.00-1.25" will be on the west and southwest facing slopes.

High Deserts: 0.10 to 0.20".

Lower Deserts: 0.01-0.10".

The snow level will remain fairly high at the onset of the storm, around 7,000 feet, then lower Thursday night to around 6,000 feet. By that time most of the precip will have ended, but a few inches will likely accumulate above 6000 feet.

Friday through Saturday will be dry and a little warmer with weak high pressure aloft. Early next week a more substantial storm will impact the West Coast. An atmospheric river ahead of a deepening trough over the Eastern Pacific will bring significant rain and mountain snow to the Sierra Nevada on Monday. This AR will drift south Tuesday or Wednesday which is when more substantial rains are possible in our area.

AVIATION. 072120Z . Coast/Valleys . BKN with bases mostly 3000 feet MSL or higher scattering out in some areas through this afternoon. Areas of low clouds inland with bases 1500-2000 ft MSL will obscure higher terrain through tonight and could bring cig impacts to KONT and KSBD 09Z-17Z Wed. Low clouds will scatter out around 17Z Wednesday.

Mountains/Deserts . Higher clouds around 10000 feet MSL will gradually clear from north to south through this afternoon. Cloud bases will be 7000 feet MSL in some areas, with locally obscured terrain above that elevation.

MARINE. Northwest winds 20-30 knots Thursday afternoon through Thursday night will produce choppy seas and likely conditions hazardous to small craft. Otherwise, no hazardous weather is expected through Saturday.

SKYWARN. Skywarn activation will not be needed Wednesday. Activation may be requested Thursday.

SGX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. CA . NONE. PZ . NONE.
