Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 930 AM PDT Thu Oct 28 2021

SYNOPSIS. Gusty Santa Ana winds near the coastal slopes of the mountains through early afternoon will maintain very warm and dry weather today. Onshore flow will return on Friday, spreading cooling inland through early next week. As the marine layer deepens, night and morning low clouds and fog will spread farther inland, reaching coastal foothills of the mountains Monday night. High clouds will dim the sun at times, otherwise the weather will be fair and seasonal next week.

DISCUSSION. FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE . SAN DIEGO . WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES .

Skies were clear over SoCal this morning and easterly winds were rather gusty along the coastal slopes with many sites reporting peak gusts of 35-45 MPH. A wind Advisory remain in effect for these areas through early afternoon. Our 12Z Miramar sounding had a sfc-based inversion and a layer of rather strong NE winds in the 3-6000 FT layer peaking at 33 KT at 5K FT MSL. Warming of around 6C was indicated in the 24 hour period below 1500 FT MSL. This will set us up for a very warm day. Latest guidance suggests it could be slightly warmer than currently forecast over western valley and mesa areas along the coastal zone. Strong offshore sfc pressure gradients of around 11 mbS (KTPH to KSAN) support the heat today. This would only modify the current forecast slightly so no updates are planned. From previous discussion .

A weak coastal eddy may develop tonight with some patchy fog late tonight over the coastal waters. That fog could be dense. Higher resolution model guidance has generally trended away from the fog reaching the coast late tonight into Friday morning. The more likely time for lows clouds and fog to spread northward along the coast would be Friday afternoon and evening with the eddy. The arrival could initially be in the form of dense fog. However, improvement in visibilities near the coast is expected overnight Friday night as the marine layer slowly deepens. The low clouds and fog could extend into the western valleys for Saturday morning.

The return of the marine layer and onshore flow will spread cooling into the coast and valleys on Friday with additional cooling on Saturday spreading inland.

LONG TERM (Saturday night through Wednesday). A coastal eddy will bring additional deepening of the marine layer with coastal low clouds for Saturday night into Sunday morning spreading inland and onto the lower coastal mountain slopes. The marine layer will then be a little less deep each night going into the early and middle part of next week. Aside from the coastal low clouds, there will also be periods of high clouds for Saturday through Monday.

Cooling will continue on Sunday. There may be slight additional cooling on Monday. With high pressure aloft near the West Coast, there will be warming for Tuesday and Wednesday with the greatest warming in the valleys as the marine layer becomes shallower.

AVIATION. 281625Z . Clear skies with unrestricted visibility through tonight. Areas of northeast winds 20-35 knots in foothills and some adjacent valleys through 21Z, with pockets of LLWS possible vcnty KONT, KSBD and KRAL.

MARINE. No hazardous marine conditions are expected through Monday. However, patchy fog with visibility below 1 NM is possible for a brief time Friday morning.

SKYWARN. Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
