Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 915 PM PDT Sun Sep 26 2021

SYNOPSIS. Residual moisture circulating around a departing upper-level storm system will threaten a few more showers or thunderstorms today, mainly near the mountains. A large trough will then develop over the West through the first half of the week, maintaining onshore flow, a deep marine layer, and cooler than average days. Weak Santa Ana conditions are favored after midweek, for much warmer and dry weather.

DISCUSSION. FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE . SAN DIEGO . WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES .

-Forecast Highlights-

* Cool pattern on strengthening west winds through Wednesday * Weak Santa Ana winds Thursday with significant warming late week

Evening Forecast Update:

A deep marine layer is in place this evening with stratus clouds stretching now almost to Imperial County. The 00Z sounding indicated the marine layer height was about 3000 feet but is likely closer to 4000 feet now given the inland extent that we are seeing. The only significant updates this evening were to add patchy drizzle to the forecast through Monday morning (we have observed drizzle here in Rancho Bernardo most of the evening) and also to increase sky cover grids a bit as well. No other changes to the forecast and the remainder of the afternoon discussion remains valid. Have a good evening!

Remainder of the afternoon forecaster discussion (1252 PM PDT):

Changeable weather will be seen this week. The first half of the week will be cool with temperatures averaging some 5-10 degrees below normal as an upper level trough dominates the region. One upper low is departing to the east. Residual moisture around this feature could allow isolated showers/t-storms to develop over the mountains this afternoon. Meanwhile the marine layer has deepened and hanging tough along the coast and even into the valleys this afternoon. Some additional slow clearing will occur from the east, but the beaches look to remain cloudy.

Another longwave trough will dive southeastward through midweek. This will lead to increasing west winds with the gustiest winds occurring Tuesday afternoon/evening along the desert mountain slopes and through the passes with gusts of mostly 30-40 mph. The trough will exit east with surface high pressure building into the Great Basin. This will set up what looks to be a weak Santa Ana wind by Thursday, followed by lightening winds Friday-Saturday but with potentially hotter temperatures as upper ridging builds in from the west.

Followed NBM temps in the extended, but if this pattern sets up as it seems, we may need to increase temperatures Friday-Saturday. Dry weather is expected to prevail for the week ahead.

AVIATION. 270300Z . Coast/Valleys . Low clouds will again spread inland throughout the coastal areas and valleys tonight, with bases 1200- 2000 ft MSL and tops to 3000 ft MSL. Expect local vis below 1 mile near higher terrain as areas of higher terrain will be obscured. Clearing will be slow Mon, mostly 17Z-20Z in the valleys with little/no clearing again near the coast. Cigs at coastal TAF sites likely to persist into Monday afternoon.

Mountains/Deserts . SCT-BKN clouds at/above 10,000 ft MSL will continue at times through tonight.

MARINE. Northwest winds will increase Tuesday over the outer coastal waters, with gusts near 20 knots possible. Otherwise, no hazardous marine weather is expected through Friday.

BEACHES. A long-period south-southwest swell and a modest west-northwest swell will bring elevated surf and a high rip current risk to the beaches Monday into Tuesday. Sets to 6 feet are possible at Orange County beaches, and sets to 5 feet are possible at San Diego beaches. The south swell will gradually diminish Tuesday through Wednesday, though the west-northwest swell will continue the elevated surf and the high rip current risk in San Diego County on Wednesday.

FIRE WEATHER. A weak Santa Ana wind is forecast to occur late Wednesday night through Thursday. Right now northeast to east wind gusts to about 30 mph is expected through the mountain passes and along the coastal mountain slopes. Relative humidity will be lowering into the 15-20% range as well. This is the period of most elevated fire weather conditions in the coming days.

SKYWARN. Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
