Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wilmington NC 224 AM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

SYNOPSIS. High pressure overhead today will shift off the Carolina Coasts tonight through Tuesday with a warming trend to follow. A cold frontal passage will occur Wed followed by high pressure and continued dry conditions for the end week period. Long period swell from distant Hurricane Sam will impact the local waters and surf starting Wed and peaking at the end of the week into early next weekend.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/. Longwave pattern aloft this period will feature a trof axis just off the U.S. Southeast Coast with the flow aloft generally WNW-NW. This will maintain a scouring effect on any moisture that makes it across the Appalachians by the time it reaches the ILM CWA. Generally looking at mainly Sunny days and a clear night for this near term period. Some moisture in the low levels may be enough for diurnally driven cu or sc especially Tue however it's growth in the vertical should be stunted. At the sfc, center of high pressure over the Eastern Carolinas today, will slide off the Carolina Coasts tonight and become situated off the U.S. Southeast Coast Tue. During Tue, the Piedmont trof is expected to develop across the Western Carolinas. Winds generally calm to light thru tonight with mesoscale processes driving the winds. MOPS guidance nearly mimics one another with highs/lows this period and will follow. Temps today will run at or slightly above normal, with the 80-85 range covering it. The sfc pg tightens Tue with SW winds increasing. This will result in some WAA with Tue max temps running in the mid 80s, except around 80 at the coast due to the resultant wind . aka sea breeze. Tonights lows, lower 60s with mid 60s along the immediate coast.

SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/. High pressure will give way during this period as a cold front drops into the area from the north. The front looks to be dry attm . so wx is expected to be fair. Lows both nights will be in the lower to middle 60s with highs Wednesday mainly in the middle 80s.

LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/. High pressure will slowly build into the area Thursday and Friday, resulting in a slightly slower decrease in temperatures than previously thought. Rain chances through this period look too low for inclusion in the forecast with dynamics to the north or west of the area. Max temperatures in the low to mid 80s THursday will cool to the upper 70s to lower 80s for Friday into the weekend. Lows will cool from the low to mid 60s Thursday night to the upper 50s to lower 60s for the weekend.

AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/. VFR conditions to dominate this period. Brief 4sm BR around daybreak, not enough to place in the TAFs other then mentioning here. Dry surface high pressure to maintain it's presence over the region with the it's center overhead today, then drifting off the coast tonight. End result, a relaxed sfc pg. Winds generally calm to start. Mesoscale features to dominate today, with a brief land breeze at the coastal terminals in the morning that will transition to a sea breeze during the afternoon and early evening. FEW/SCT stratocu or cu today given moisture avbl in the sfc-8H level.

Extended Outlook . VFR, thanks to a high pressure regime along with a couple dry cold frontal passages.

MARINE.

Through Tuesday . Synoptic-wise, Center of a 1020mb high will transition from the Eastern Carolinas to off the Carolina Coasts this evening and weaken while situated and centered off the Southeast U.S. Coast during Tuesday. A Piedmont trof will develop across the Western Carolinas during Tue. Looking at mesoscale induced winds today into this evening, ie. Land breeze this morning, transitioning to a sea breeze by midday thru this evening. Offshore wind 5 to 9 kt this morning will become southerly around 10 kt this aftn and evening. The sfc pg will tighten across the waters Tue with SSW-SW winds increasing to 10-15 kt or around 15 kt by late Tue. The 8 to 10 second period Easterly swell will dominate seas thru tonight with short period wind waves threatening to dominate the seas spectrum during Tue. No pcpn expected this period.

Tuesday night through Friday . latest guidance delays the onset of E to NE winds a bit. Expect SW winds of 10 to 15 KT Tuesday night before becoming westerly Wednesday. Winds will back to SW and decrease to 10 KT or less Wed afternoon through Thursday morning before becoming easterly at 10 to 15 KT later Thursday and NE Friday. Seas of 2 to 3 feet area expected Tue night through Wed night before building to 3 to 5 FT by Friday.
