Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Peachtree City GA 339 PM EDT Thu Oct 28 2021

. Afternoon Area Forecast Discussion .

SHORT TERM /Tonight through Friday Night/.

Finally beginning to see a little clearing move into western portions of Georgia after a cool, rainy start to the morning and afternoon. Where the sun does come out, expect to see a small rebound in temperatures before we cool back down into the 40s and 50s tonight as cooler air continues to move in. Expecting showers to continue across northern GA, and some models indicated the possibility of some spotty heavier showers popping up as far south as the metro during the evening hours.

Taking a broader view, satellite shows the giant bowling ball that is our vertically stacked, mature cyclone spinning beautifully over the Ozarks with tongue of moisture from Florida and the Gulf extending up over the eastern portion of the CWA and into the cyclone. This will continue to push east and northeast tonight and tomorrow, keeping cool air across the area, as well as clouds and some rain chances across north Georgia. Temperatures will be 10-15 degrees F below average tomorrow across most of the CWA as a result if expected temperatures play out.

Wind Advisory is still around and will likely be allowed to expire at 6 PM as intended. Still seeing a few gusts, especially at elevation, that have been at or greater than 35 mph this afternoon, though they are becoming less frequent over time. These should continue to taper off as some of the stronger dynamics that were in place driving low level winds that were able to mix into the boundary layer weaken as the vertically stacked low begins to slowly weaken.

LONG TERM /Saturday through Thursday/.

Upper low lifting northeast Saturday with the upper flow flattening to essentially zonal across the southern U.S. Sunday into Monday. Upper flow turns increasingly southwesterly for the latter half of next week as the upper pattern begins amplifying once again. Still looking at a primarily dry extended forecast right now. Lingering showers Saturday across the far north as the upper low lifts northeast, with precipitation chances creeping back in as the upper flow turns southwesterly at the end of the period. After a cool start to the period, temperatures moderate to closer to seasonal normals for next week.

AVIATION. 18Z Update . Bulk of precipitation should be coming to an end for metro TAF sites very soon, by 20Z. Some showers could linger through the TAF period. Cigs currently at IFR or lower in some cases, should improve after 20Z to at least MVFR. Possible we see enough clearing for VFR if we go to SCT. Winds will be ESE, switching to SW by evening (00Z timeframe), 8-15 kts with higher gusts, though likely not as gusty as earlier. Could see another lowering of cigs across metro tomorrow morning to IFR, though uncertainty on how far south they reach into metro.

//ATL Confidence . 18Z Update . Medium confidence on afternoon cigs and Friday morning cigs. High all else.
