Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wilmington NC 749 PM EST Sun Jan 16 2022

SYNOPSIS. As a potent storm system exits, cold air and gusty winds with clearing expected into Monday. Winds will ease with fair weather through mid-week. Approaching cold front will bring a chance of rain Thursday, with frigid Arctic air following the front Friday into next weekend.

UPDATE. Lull in pcp and winds early this evening as low pressure moves off to the northeast as gradient relaxes a bit. Winds will pick up later this evening with some showers moving across the area, mainly inland and just off the coast as mid to upper low tracks northward and gradient tightens again. Dry and cool air will wrap around from the W-SW on the back end of the system into early Monday.

Just made minor adjustments to pops and weather, but otherwise, high surf and gale warning remain in effect with SPS issued for possible black ice inland. Levels along the Cape Fear river downtown were dropping and therefore the Coastal Flood Advisory has been cancelled.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/. Latest surface analysis shows a 998mb center of surface low pressure just offshore of the South Carolina/North Carolina border. This low has been deepening the last few hours, a trend that will be continuing through tonight, as the low races towards the DelMarVa region. This system has brought cold temperatures to the region, though a slow warming trend has taken shape. The Winter Weather Advisory from earlier today has officially been cancelled. However, wet surfaces along and west of I-95 will likely turn into black ice, due to freezing low temperatures expected tonight. A Special Weather Statement has been issued accordingly for these areas, valid until 9 AM EST Monday morning. To the east, lows are expected to drop into the mid-to-upper 30s, with a WSW breeze at 10-15 mph.

Monday, high pressure will start to slide in from the east. Pressure gradient will still be strong, prompting a healthy westerly breeze at 15 mph with gusts as high as 25-30 mph. Skies start clearing late Monday morning, but even with the sunshine, high temperatures will be chilly, lingering in the mid-to-upper 40s, roughly 10 degrees below normal for mid-January.

SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/. After a cold night and nippy start in the 20s, temperatures to warm to normal Tuesday, mainly 50s across the board, plenty sun. Minimum temperatures Tuesday night under mainly clear skies, should dip to near normal levels for mid January in the 30s, light wind.

LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/. Approaching cold front and offshore high brings Max-T to above normal Wednesday with fair weather and perhaps increasing high clouds later in day. Appears pops peak Thursday, but linger at coast into Friday in GFS and ECMWF. Potentially coldest air of the season Friday into Saturday, with MEX guidance showing 22 at ILM Saturday morning, 24 around the Myrtles, 21 Lumberton. The cold air warrants inclusion of snow, given the temperatures beginning Thursday night.

AVIATION /00Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/. Dry slot and lull in winds as gradient relaxes as sfc low moves off to the northeast. Lingering IFR ceilings will affect inland terminals as upper low follows behind bringing and increase in gusty winds and mainly light showers after 02z. IFR/MVFR Ceilings will lift and improve toward morning as plenty of dry air moves in behind the system, but winds will continue to gust out of the SW to W. VFR expected after 12z with gusty westerly winds up to 25 kts diminishing through Monday.

Extended Outlook . VFR to dominate Monday evening through Wednesday. Next flight restrictions due by Wednesday night as a complicated system approaches from the west.

MARINE. Through Monday . High Surf Advisory for 6-9 ft seas in the surf zone continues through 7 AM Monday morning for the entire immediate coast, spanning from Georgetown County, SC to Pender County, SC. Meanwhile, a Gale Warning continues for all local waters through Monday evening, due to elevated winds and seas. Winds remain out of the WSW most of the time, slightly veering to the WNW towards the end of this forecast period. Winds may gust as high as 40kts through Monday morning. Seas tonight remain high at 10-12ft out 20nm from shore. By daybreak, seas start recovering, with seas 3-5ft at the coast and 6-8ft out 20nm from shore by Monday afternoon.

Monday Night through Friday . After elevated winds Monday night improving marine conditions the primary theme as winds abate Tuesday into Wednesday. Seas will drop way down potentially less than 2 feet mid-week, with little wind and not much swell at all to speak of. A cold front arrives with rain Thursday into Friday but it appears winds and seas will hold below advisory levels. Small craft advisory appears in the making next weekend however, as strong NE winds develop and jack seas up in the developing NE fetch,

ILM WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. SC . High Surf Advisory until 7 AM EST Monday for SCZ054-056. NC . High Surf Advisory until 7 AM EST Monday for NCZ106-108-110. MARINE . Gale Warning until 7 PM EST Monday for AMZ250-252-254-256.
