Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Columbia SC 253 AM EDT Mon Sep 27 2021

SYNOPSIS. Dry weather will continue the middle of the week with high temperatures increasing a couple degrees each day. Slightly cooler temperatures will return for late this week into the weekend.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/. High pressure will continue to dominate the weather across the Southeast today through tonight. The center of the high pressure will move off the coast tonight as light and variable surface winds become more southwest later today into tonight. Once again, time sections continue to indicate a little low level moisture, but the remainder of the atmosphere remains quite dry through the period.

Boundary layer temperatures are about 1 to 2 degrees warmer today and winds will shift to the southwest by afternoon. Expect afternoon high temperatures will full sun to be around 1 to 2 degrees warmer than Sunday. Expect most areas to reach the low to mid 80s. With clear skies tonight and high pressure sliding off the coast, guidance is indicating lows in the lower 60s for most areas. Will stay close to guidance for overnight mins. Once again, no precipitation expected through the period.

SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/. Continued fair with moderating temps. High amplitude upper pattern. Upper high to build to our west, ridging from the Gulf of Mexico up to Hudson Bay, while upper trough deepens over the east coast. Dry surface high over our region to begin weakening Tuesday in response to an approaching weak front/trough dropping down into our region Wednesday, with minimal impact. Guidance indicates temps rebounding to above normal.

LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/. Operational and ensemble means continue to appear in good agreement in maintaining a high amplitude upper pattern through most of the period with ridge axis to our west and deepening upper trough along the east coast. Model consensus generally indicates a closed upper low, and associated surface low, to develop near New England or Canadian Maritimes. Another weak surface boundary appears to back door down into our region late Thu/Fri, with appearance of limited moisture to work with. Deep northerly flow appears will bring down cooler and mostly dry air into our region behind the boundary into next weekend.

AVIATION /07Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/. VSBY Restrictions at Fog Prone AGS but otherwise VFR.

Skies will remain mostly clear/sunny through the period. Except for AGS and possibly OGB, TAFS will remain VFR through the period. Shallow river fog has already affected the tafs at AGS from the late evening into the overnight hours. Expect this trend to continue until about 12Z this morning. Similar conditions to last night with IFR VSBYs expected with TEMPO conditions of VSBYs dropping below 1SM. Winds will be generally out of the SW tomorrow around 5kts with a limited cumulus field around 5kft. By late afternoon/evening expect any clouds to diminish and clear skies to return.

EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK . Besides brief restrictions in the early morning hours due to patchy fog, no impacts to aviation are expected.
