Area Forecast Discussion . UPDATED National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA 950 PM PST Sat Jan 15 2022

SYNOPSIS. 15/906 PM.

It will be partly to mostly cloudy with a chance of light showers tonight and Monday. Temperatures will mostly be above normal despite all of the clouds. Fair weather is likely for next week after Monday.

SHORT TERM (SAT-TUE). 15/904 PM.

Cutoff low pressure centered off the coast of Point Conception will continue to send bands of mid and high level clouds across the region through Sunday. Radar has shown bands of showers this evening across much of LA/Ventura counties, with rainfall amounts generally less than 0.10 inches. Shower activity is expected to gradually taper off overnight, with chance of any rain falling to less than 10 percent on Sunday.

Offshore pressure gradients are becoming weaker with time, resulting in an overall decrease of offshore winds which will continue to decrease through Sunday morning. Then increasing onshore flow Sunday afternoon through Tuesday which will bring a cooling trend to the region.

*** From previous discussion ***

By Monday and Monday night, the threat of some scattered showers will return as the low opens up and moves inland. Rainfall amounts, if any, through Tuesday morning will be very light (on the order of a few hundredths of an inch at worst).

As for temperatures, there will be a bit of a roller coaster. With less cold advection on Sunday and continued weak offshore gradients in the morning, temperatures will be about 4-8 degrees warmer than today. For Monday and Tuesday, with the return of weak onshore flow, temperatures will be cooler, dropping to near or slightly below seasonal normals.

LONG TERM (WED-SAT). 15/200 PM.

For the extended, the deterministic runs exhibit some noticeable synoptic differences, leading to a bit lower confidence in the forecast. The ECMWF and its ensemble members build a nice upper level ridge over the West Coast Wednesday through Saturday. The deterministic GFS actually undercuts the developing upper ridge with a low dropping southwest across the area. Looking at the GFS ensemble members, the mean matches much better with the ECMWF solution. So, forecast will be greatly tilted towards the ECMWF solutions.

That being said, the sensible weather through the period is expected to be very benign. With the ridge building overhead, skies should generally remain mostly clear through the period. There may be some coastal stratus/fog Wednesday morning, but areal coverage would be limited. For Thursday through the weekend, offshore gradients are forecast to gradually increase. So, there will be some gusty northeast winds from time-to-time. Additionally the combo of the upper level ridge and offshore gradients will bring warmer temperatures to the area Thursday through Saturday.

AVIATION. 16/0540Z.

At 0445Z at KLAX, there was no marine inversion. There was a sfc based inversion with a top of 500 ft and a temperature of 19 C.

High confidence in VFR conditions for all sites through the period. There will be light offshore winds for most coastal/valley through late morning. KLAX . High confidence in VFR TAF. Any east wind component will be under 6 kt.

KBUR . High confidence in VFR TAF.

MARINE. 15/908 PM.

In the outer waters, Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level conds are not expected thru Thu. There is, however, a 20%-30% chance of SCA level seas tonight for the northern zones (PZZ670/PZZ673).

Across the inner waters north of Pt. Sal, winds and seas are expected to remain below SCA levels thru Thu.

Across the inner waters south of Pt. Conception, NE to E winds will continue to weaken tonight. SCA conds are not expected thru Thu.

LOX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. CA . NONE. PZ . NONE.

.HAZARD POTENTIAL OUTLOOK (TUE-SAT).

Gusty Santa Ana winds will bring the potential for downed tree limbs and dry air over Ventura and areas of Los Angeles Counties into Sunday morning.
