Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wilmington NC 230 PM EDT Thu Sep 23 2021

SYNOPSIS. Cooler and dry early fall air will settle into the region with no rain in the forecast until late next week. Temperatures near to below normal this weekend will be reinforced by a dry cold front early Monday. A warming trend is expected by mid-week.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/. Low-level moisture will linger into evening, but lowering dewpoints overnight will maintain max-rh values below 90% across the area and no significant fog problems anticipated despite very wet ground in spots. Plenty sunshine minutes Friday, about void of column moisture though a shallow fair weather cumulus is possible in the afternoon. Saturday the coolest of the upcoming 2 mornings, with widespread 50s across the area, upper 40s likely over interior cool spots daybreak on Saturday. North winds less than 15 mph Friday afternoon will become light late in the day.

SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/. High pressure along the Appalachians will remain in control through the short term period. This pattern will support light N to NWly flow and high temperatures at or slightly below climatology. Radiational cooling late Saturday night will allow temperatures to drop to below normal with lows in the mid 50s most inland locations.

LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/. While cooler weather will prevail Sunday before a gradual warm- up occurs into the middle of the upcoming week drier weather is expected to persist through most of the long term period. High pressure will slip off the coast by Tuesday with an inland trough to develop. The next back-door type cold front may move southward across the area late Wednesday or Thursday providing the next chance of rain.

AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/. MVFR stratus across far eastern NC will clear out of ILM around 18-19z, with front and clouds moving further to the east. Clear skies and dry weather for the area through tomorrow afternoon. Predominantly northwesterly winds this afternoon will turn northerly for tomorrow around 10 kts.

Extended Outlook . VFR and high pressure will dominate throughout the extended. A dry CFP will occur Sun, followed by continued high pressure.

MARINE. Through Friday night . The ocean has mellowed as local wind-sea and convection have waned over the area. Weak ESE swell from Peter is fanning onshore in wave periods around 11 seconds, mixed with SE waves of slightly shorter wave periods, resulting in 3-5 foot seas that will subside to 2-3 feet Friday. Because of moderate N-NNE winds Friday, a moderate chop will develop, with N waves every 5-6 seconds in a developed wind-sea through Friday afternoon, easing Friday night. The atmosphere is dry so no showers or TSTMs expected over the 0-20 nm waters this period.

Saturday through Tuesday . High pressure over the Appalachians and weak low pressure offshore will maintain generally light offshore flow through Sunday. The high will shift offshore by Monday evening allowing for a S-SW fetch to develop. The S-SW fetch will tighten during Tuesday as inland trough becomes better established. At this time it appears that conditions will remain below Small Craft thresholds through the period.

ILM WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. SC . None. NC . High Rip Current Risk until 8 PM EDT this evening for NCZ106- 108. MARINE . None.
