Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Peachtree City GA 255 PM EST Thu Jan 20 2022

SHORT TERM /Tonight through Friday Night/.

An upper-level, positively-tilted longwave trough is currently stretched from Lake Michigan through El Paso with broad southwesterly flow through the Southeast to New England, Behind the trough a sharp ridge axis is fueling strong subsidence in the Northern plains and Western Midwest regions into a strong surface High pressure system. This high pressure is surging a frontal system through the forecast area as we speak with no real low-pressure organization given the lack of overlap with the upper longwave trough and surface coastal baroclinic zones. The result is an unorganized frontal system with a broad shield of rain due to the isentropic lift of a low-level Gulf airmass with dewpoints in the low 50s over the colder high pressure airmass with temperatures in the 30s that is currently forcing light rain across the majority of the forecast area.

As the frontal system continues to push southward, so too will the rain, as the colder airmass deepens over the forecast area tonight. Thankfully, through tonight, the overlap of near-freezing air is not expected to coincide with ongoing precip. In general, that expectation continues through the short term. However, as the high pressure move eastward a weak wedge front, fueled more by the broad high pressure pattern spilling over the Appalachians moreso than cold air damming, will push into the eastern portions of the forecast area bringing mid and lower 30s temperatures with it.

As a weak low pressure begins to form well off the GA/SC coastline, some weak signal for wrap around precip could exist in portions of eastern Georgia where some temperatures near freezing may fall to near or slightly below freezing on Friday night. With this combination, some very light periods of freezing rain, or even freezing drizzle, may be possible for portions of east central Georgia late Friday afternoon into early Saturday morning. However, no more than a slight glaze is generally expected only for isolated areas, and any tiny accumulations would only be seen on elevated surfaces with a small potential for isolated slick spots on bridges and overpasses. Otherwise, no major impacts are expected at this time.

LONG TERM /Saturday through Thursday/.

The weekend will be dry and cool with temperatures running several degrees below seasonal normals. Lingering cloud cover will gradually clear from west to east during the day Saturday as the earlier shortwave exits eastward. A weak clipper passing north of the forecast area on Sunday will bring little sensible impact with dry conditions persisting through Monday.

The next chance for precipitation will return by Tuesday morning as a southern stream shortwave approaches and its associated surface low moves along the Gulf Coast. At this point, temperatures appear marginal for any frozen precipitation in north Georgia. The current forecast will continue to carry some chance for rain or snow across far north Georgia in far northeast Georgia Tuesday morning, though confidence is low. Otherwise, expect an increase in rain showers on Tuesday tapering by Tuesday night. A reinforcing shot of cool and dry conditions then should return by midweek.

AVIATION. 18Z Update . A band of -RA impacting all TAF sights will move out of the area from NW to SE. Expected clearing of ATL sites by 20-21Z, AHN/CSG by 23Z, and MCN by 2-6Z. Winds out of the NW between 10-15kts and ocnl gusts to 20, will shift out of the NE around 7-10Z at most ATL sites and AHN, with NE shift elsewhere by 12-15Z. VSBY concerns were -RA exists, with patchy restrictions down to 2-4 SM should mostly clear the area by 00Z. CIGs will be jumpy with IFR starting for most of the forecast area accompanying the RA and moving SE being replaced by MVFR. Some IFR expected to build back into the forecast area after 03Z potentually affecting AHN/MCN/and some ATL sites. Best timing for ATL is IFR through 20-21Z, MVFR between 2021Z-2114Z, and IFR from 2115Z-2120Z, and MVFR beyond. Some patchy drizzle and freezing drizzle possible but not expected on Friday.

//ATL Confidence . 18Z Update . Medium confidence on all elements.
