Area Forecast Discussion . UPDATED National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA 1016 PM PST Tue Jan 18 2022

SYNOPSIS. 18/120 PM.

After some low clouds and fog Wednesday morning, skies will be sunny through the next 7 days. There will be warming most days and high temperatures will rise to well above normal on Thursday. Breezy Santa Ana conditions are expected Thursday and Saturday. A cooling trend is expected early next week.

SHORT TERM (TUE-FRI). 18/816 PM.

***UPDATE***

The low cloud pattern this evening is fairly chaotic, with many patches of clouds from the San Gabriel mountains to the surrounding edges of the LA basin to the interior Central Coast and Santa Ynez Valley. The lack of a marine inversion is definitely a contributing factor to the chaos. As the night progresses, cloud coverage will likely expand to all the coastal areas and likely the lower coastal valleys as well. However, the chaotic coverage may continue and there could be fewer clouds than expected. Regardless, it's a tricky low confidence stratus forecast through Wednesday morning. Some patches of clouds may also linger over the mountains overnight, but north to northeasterly flow will likely disintegrate them.

An upper-level ridge over the Eastern Pacific will start to nudge towards the West Coast on Wednesday. There will be fairly light offshore flow across the interior and onshore flow near the coast. The rising heights and thicknesses will help bring some warming across the area, and especially away from the coast combined with light offshore flow.

A forecast update will be issued shortly for low cloud coverage tonight through Wednesday morning. Otherwise the rest of the forecast is in good shape.

***From Previous Discussion***

High pressure will return Thursday along with another round of Santa Ana winds that will drive temps significantly higher Thursday through the weekend.

There are actually two separate offshore wind events during that time. The first one on Thursday will be the weaker of the two but likely just enough for low end wind advisories across LA/Ventura Counties. Gradients remain decent Friday but much less upper support should result in winds remaining below advisory levels. Temps expected to climb well into the 70s Thursday and Friday for coast/valleys. Might be some very minor cooling along the coast Friday due to an earlier sea breeze.

LONG TERM (SAT-TUE). 18/117 PM.

An inside slider will drop south along the eastern end of the West Coast ridge Friday night into Saturday. This will provide a significant energy boost to the offshore flow Saturday morning and bring advisory and possibly low end warning level winds to LA/Ventura Counties. Will likely see some gusty winds in the Santa Lucias in SLO County as well. Downsloping winds should result in warming temperatures across coast/valleys Saturday and could see some highs approaching 80. Offshore flow weakens Sunday and by Monday light onshore returns so a cooling trend with much lighter winds will begin early next week. The rest of next week looks pretty quiet with light winds, near normal temps, no precipitation.

AVIATION. 19/0611Z.

At 445Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 1500 ft deep. The top of the inversion was at 1900 ft with a temps of 11 C.

Moderate confidence in most TAFs through 20Z, high confidence in desert TAFs. Good confidence that all non desert sites will get cigs overnight (xcp KSBA which has a 40 percent chc of no cigs) mus lower confidence in timing or arrival and flight cat changes. Timing of VFR transition could be off by +/- 90 minutes.

Good confidence in all TAFs after 20Z

KLAX . Moderate confidence in TAF through 20Z then good confidence. Timing of cat changes could be off by +/- 2 hours. There is a 20% chance of cigs staying only as low as BKN010. Any east wind component should not exceed 6 kt.

KBUR . Moderate confidence in TAF through 20Z then good confidence. Timing of cat changes could be off by +/- 2 hours. There is a 20% chance of OVC008 conds 10Z-15Z.

MARINE. 18/742 PM.

There is a 40% chance of Small Craft Advisory level NW winds across the western portion of the outer waters Tonight thru Wed night. Otherwise, winds and seas are expected to remain below SCA levels thru the period.

LOX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. CA . NONE. PZ . NONE.

.HAZARD POTENTIAL OUTLOOK (FRI-TUE).

Strong Santa Ana winds are expected Saturday in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.
