Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA 153 PM PDT Thu Oct 28 2021

SYNOPSIS. 28/913 AM.

A moderate Santa Ana wind event will bring gusty northeast winds and well above normal temperatures today. The coasts and valleys will cool on Friday. More widespread cooler temperatures and cloudier skies are expected by the weekend.

SHORT TERM (TDY-SUN). 28/1258 PM.

Synoptically, the area is under a large ridge of high pressure to the west of a CONUS-spanning low pressure system. While there is a minor shortwave feature that worked across our area today, the weather is marked by warm conditions, clear skies, and gusty offshore wind in LA and Ventura Counties. Ensembles are showing that over the next several days there will be low pressure systems passing through northern California that may be just strong enough to affect northern SLO County. The first of these will be on Late Friday / Saturday and should not affect our area. The next will be on Monday and third on Wednesday, and these final two may produce some light precipitation.

Still seeing the gusty winds, mainly in the Los Angeles and Ventura County mountains, as a weak to moderate Santa Ana event will last into this afternoon. The winds made it to lower elevations as well with Oxnard and Camarillo both gusting between 20 and 30 mph today. Temperatures were driven up by the winds, as expected. Downtown LA hit 84 so far and the Oxnard plain is above 90 degrees. Today will be the warmest day of the next 7 across the coasts and valleys

A small upper low will move into northern California on Friday, flattening the ridge somewhat. Heights will not fall fast enough or far enough to affect max temps across the interior and max temps there may rise an additional 1 to 3 degrees in those areas. There will still be weak offshore flow in the morning which will generate some local 15 to 25 mph canyon winds. The surface flow will quickly turn around to onshore and an earlier and stronger seabreeze will lower max temps 5 to 10 degrees across the coasts and valleys.

The onshore flow will spin up a marine layer stratus deck which will cover most of the coasts by Saturday morning. Aside from the low clouds, the upper low to the north will usher in enough mid level clouds to make the afternoon partly cloudy. The clouds, cool marine air and falling hgts will all gang up and lower max temps 8 to 12 degrees. Most max temps will end up about 6 degrees below normal.

Ensembles agree that a very weak ridge will move over the area on Sunday. Onshore flow will increase and its likely that the marine layer clouds will overspread the coasts and move into most of the valleys. Above the marine layer clouds enough high level clouds will move overhead to make the day another partly cloudy one. The ridge will not be strong enough to affect temps and the deeper marine layer will knock another several degrees from the max temps. Max temps will struggle to reach 70 degrees in most areas.

LONG TERM (MON-THU). 28/109 PM.

The EC ensemble is wetter than GEFS, but both bring a cold front to the area on Monday. There is a large ensemble spread, and the forecast favors the wetter solutions. The combination of a deep marine layer stratus deck and mid and high level clouds from the cold front will make for a mostly cloudy day. The front will bring a slight chance of rain to the Central Coast both in the afternoon and the evening, but QPF amounts of less than 0.1" are forecast over northern SLO County. More cooling due to the clouds will make Monday the coolest day of the next 7 with max temps 8 to 12 degrees below normal.

The ensemble spread noticeably decreases Tuesday and Wednesday as weak ridging builds back into the area. Heights will be near 582 dam each day. The onshore flow to the east will weaken and offshore flow from the north will develop, limiting the marine layer stratus clouds and kicking off a warming trend. Expect 3 to 6 degrees of warming Tuesday and another 2 to 3 degrees on Wednesday.

Another low pressure system will approach northern California on Thursday and the associated trough will drop down through at least the northern portions of the area. Exact timing is difficult to say this far out, but probably the chance of rain will begin Thursday morning in San Luis Obispo County.

AVIATION. 28/1521Z.
