Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Peachtree City GA 253 PM EDT Mon Oct 18 2021

SHORT TERM /Tonight through Tuesday Night/.

The short term will remain quiet with a high pressure ridge in place across the SE. Surface winds will gradually develop a more southerly component later this evening which will keep the RH values from falling as low tomorrow. Winds will range from 5 to 10 mph, though there will be times where they are light and variable during the overnight hours.

Temperatures will largely stay around normal for this time of year with highs today in the low 70s. We can expect a gradual warming trend to begin tomorrow as that low moves off. Temperatures will likely begin to climb back into the lower 80s in south and central Georgia beginning to tomorrow.

LONG TERM /Wednesday through Monday/.

The long term period will start out dry courtesy of subsidence from an upper-level ridge over the eastern CONUS and surface high pressure over the southern Eastern Seaboard. On Thursday and Friday, a low pressure system will track across the Great Lakes region and drive a cold front across the CWA, while a surge of Gulf moisture overspreads the forecast area. The GFS is progging MUCAPE up to ~1500 J/kg across northern and western GA on Thursday, with the instability axis shifting southward across central GA on Friday, in tandem with the front sinking southward. Maintaining chance PoPs across much of the area during this period with a slight chance for thunderstorms (except for far northwestern GA, where a chance of thunderstorms has been introduced for Thursday afternoon). QPF with this front is unimpressive -- 0.10" to 0.25", mainly across northern and western GA. The FROPA will bring drier air to the CWA, but not so much a significant temperature change. In the wake of the cold front and heading into the weekend, the upper-level flow will become largely zonal with the GFS and ECMWF hinting at the return of a more amplified upper-level pattern heading into early next week.

AVIATION . 18Z Update .

VFR conditions will prevail for the rest of the day with SKC CIGS. Light SSE winds at 5 to 8 kts will shift to SSW this afternoon before becoming light and variable tonight. This pattern will likely remain in place tomorrow with winds gradually becoming NW tomorrow afternoon.

//ATL Confidence . 18Z Update .
