Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 200 PM PST Sun Jan 16 2022

SYNOPSIS. Upper low pressure off the Southern California coast will move through California Monday night and early Tuesday. High clouds will prevail until then with cooler weather Monday as the marine layer develops. Showers are expected at times Monday evening into Tuesday. Mostly light rainfall amounts are expected. Dry weather and gradual warming will occur the second half of this week under a strong West Coast ridge, along with weak to moderate Santa Ana Winds.

DISCUSSION. FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE . SAN DIEGO . WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES .

An upper low continues roughly 300 miles west of Point Conception, and this will be mostly stationary through Monday morning, then it will move east. High clouds, along with increasing mid-level clouds will prevail this afternoon through Monday along with developing coastal stratus tonight.

When the low moves onshore, there will be a decent moisture up to about 700 mb over our area, though with rather weak dynamics. Rainfall will be most likely late Monday night and early Tuesday morning, which is the most favorable time of day/night historically as humidities are typically higher then in the lowest layers. We will plan on raising probabilities of precipitation in our forecast since most of the ENS ensemble solutions show at least a few hundredths of an inch, but there is a lot of variability. For example, with the NBM 1D viewer for SAN, the 50th percentile/median accumulated precipitation for Monday night-Tuesday is only 0.04" but yet the 90th percentile is 0.23". Most of the high-resolution models show light precipitation amounts at low elevations but with some orographics in the mountains, and a few of the high-res models, including the 1.3-km CANSAC WRF show locally over one-half inch in the mountains, which is logical given the saturation/near-saturation at 850 mb and westerly winds around 15 knots at that level. There could be a small amount of snow, perhaps locally around an inch, in the mountains as 700 mb temperatures fall to around -4 deg C, but overall this will not be a big rain or snow maker.

Models/ensembles show potentially another short wave around Wednesday diving south along the West Coast as the ridge develops off the coast. After that solutions are relatively uniform with a high-amplitude ridge over the West Coast along with weak to moderate low-level east/northeast flow. This will bring fair dry weather with warmer days, with widespread 70s at lower elevations likely starting around Thursday. Little change in that pattern is expected through at least early next week.

AVIATION. 162055Z . SCT-BKN clouds 6,000-9,000 ft MSL will continue through today with a BKN layer around 25,000 ft MSL. Vis remaining mostly unrestricted through today. CIGS 1,500-2,000 ft developing west of the mountains after 06Z Monday, increasing in coverage overnight and obscuring higher terrain. Chances for CIG impacts at coastal TAF sites 09Z to 18Z but timing remains uncertain.

MARINE. No hazardous marine weather conditions are expected through Thursday. Light showers are possible on Tuesday.

BEACHES. A west swell of 4 ft at 14-15 seconds will continue to produce elevated surf in southern San Diego County through today. Wave sets of 3 to 5 sets will be possible. Surf heights will continue to trend lower. Moderate to strong rip currents will accompany the surf.

SKYWARN. Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.

SGX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. CA . NONE. PZ . NONE.
